Where would you LIKE to see cuts made?

I recognise that people are going to vote for certain parties because if another party gets in they might lose some benefit/possibly jobs etc. Or because they have a deep-seated hatred of one side, for whatever reason.

But (and you can correct me, I know very little about politics) the country is in debt and some cuts have to be made, regardless of who makes them.

So where would you be prepared to see cuts being made?

too late now, but i think the money spent on children's centres should have gone to schools

muddleduck · 06/05/2010 14:31

trident

LaurieFairyCake · 06/05/2010 14:34

trident

and put taxes up - I want to pay more - they are the lowest in Europe

Don't let people inherit more than 50 grand - rest to go back to society

Rosieeo · 06/05/2010 14:36

Really? God, I would emigrate if I'd managed to work my arse off and it was going to be taken away from my kids to go back into the kitty.

Agree with Laurie no one needs more than that.We have lost the big picture and are obsessed with what we have amassed and hanging onto it

muddleduck · 06/05/2010 14:39

I agree with LFC - inheritance just maintains the inequalities in our society. Why should I get a big chunk of money if my parents get hit by a bus? I don't deserve/need it any more than my friends with less weathly parents.

Obviously different rules should apply when there are financial dependents involved.

ShinyAndNew · 06/05/2010 14:40

Tax credits for higher earners should be slowly reduced.

Higher tax rate for those earning over £55k

Higher rate of inheritance tax on property/estates worth more than 1m.

Make the super rich pay for NHS treatment.

Actually impose fines for littering/dog fouling etc instead of just saying you will.

muddleduck · 06/05/2010 14:42

child trust funds.

nice idea, but a realtively painfree saving.

christmasmum · 06/05/2010 14:45

End tax relief on things like pensions and childcare vouchers for higher tax payers - it's frankly insane!

christmasmum · 06/05/2010 14:46

I actually meant to put end 'higher rate' tax relief...

sethstarkaddersmum · 06/05/2010 14:46

there are certain quangos that need axing (QCDA for instance).

expatinscotland · 06/05/2010 14:46

MP pensions.

Health in Pregnancy Grant

and what LFC said.

Nointhemood · 06/05/2010 14:51

agree with the child trust fund great idea but alot of people i know can't afford to pay into it. Stoping tax credits over 50k, increase taxes, i would make sure that fuel allowances were paid in vouchers not cash as i know many younger pensioners who use it to go on holiday and others who just bank it as they only use a calor gas fire anyway.Theres also a maternity grant that id cut which is fairly new.

AvaGoOnTheSwingometer · 06/05/2010 14:51

HIP grant abolished, CTF abolished and Child Benefit to be cut for any household earning over 50k, also for it not to be paid out to immigrants who work here yet maintain children in their home country.

AvaGoOnTheSwingometer · 06/05/2010 14:53

and yes, Tax Credits to be cut past 50k

confusedfirsttimemum · 06/05/2010 14:54

The thing is, none of this is the level of pain we need.

CTFs. Absolutely, scap em. But we need some big things on the scale of Trident too.

I know the old saying it 'look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves', but we're going to need to find a hell of a lot of pennies if we don't start flagging some big ticket items.

muddleduck · 06/05/2010 14:54

Increase pensionable age for most public sector workers to 65.

I think the NHS should cut Choose and Book, sad though I am to say it as I still think it's quite a good idea, and being able to email the doctors' letters with all the test results and images attached securely with zero effort is excellent - it would be nice to keep that IMO. However, actually booking patients into the clinic via a call centre is v slow IME and too often it's possible to book people into the wrong clinic or into the right clinic but without all the ancillary appointments they need to make it work. Those spurious choice exercises in a situation where you really have very little choice anyway are just the sorts of things that Labour should work towards shedding. Luckily it's so associated with Labour that the Tories should have no trouble getting rid of it.

I also think that every NHS trust should whitelist vital internet sites and allow access to those only from all PCs. Watch NHS admin productivity soar.

TheArsenicCupCake · 06/05/2010 14:56

Lower limits for ctc.. Or just have wtc .. IMO something is wrong when huge companies pay workers low wages.. Which then get topped up by government.. And said large companies make billions profit each year... So I'd take a close look at that.. Withou effecting small companies.

Hospital carpark money would have to go to the hospital .. Not a private company..

Child trust funds would go

personally I'd leave inheritance alone.. What is left to pass on has already had tax paid on it at the time... You can't then take it away.. I would leave country if this happened..

LaurieFairyCake · 06/05/2010 14:56

Change people's mindset about money.

  1. Increase a sense of personal responsibility. Make it usual to pay for your own care towards the end of your life - instead of being concerned with passing it on/hoarding it.
  1. Change the publics mindset about 'retirement' - people start work much later at 22-25 (after Uni)and only want to work til 55-60. So people think its ok to only work for 30 years and then be a drain on the state/draw a pension for the last 10-30 years

raise retirement to 65 and means test the state pension.

Why is it ok to have a young person on £45 job seekers allowance but an elderly person 'lives in poverty' on £90?

Nointhemood · 06/05/2010 14:59

Also dont the government fund these life skill centre's (im currently doing a computer course) and do sixth formers get paid to stay on at school £30 per week???? I never got paid i had to get a saturday job.

choosyfloosy · 06/05/2010 15:02

Also I would cut Trident but freely admit I know very little about international affairs. Personally I would also set a date for the end of any professional army in this country but I can whistle for that one!

I would introduce 5% VAT on second hand goods and a tax on kerosene.

I would love to see a scheme where the more unpaid overtime you do, the more heavily you are taxed. Get the job done and GO HOME fgs. But I can imagine that one might not work...

Rosieeo · 06/05/2010 15:04

I can totally get on board with the CTF thing and the CTC/WTC for people earning over 50K (although I don't think you get very much anyway at that level).

Have to admit that I don't understand the desire for everyone to be equal. For me, it would just destroy any drive/ambition. Why bother if they're going to take it off you?
