I read my card (now lost) and I swear I read it was not needed to vote. I read on a thread that you need ID or your card - my ID is in my maiden name, also still at my mums address (driving licence) , ditto (a now also lost) passport. Polling cards are goodness knows where.... do I just need me, or other stuff? [panic]

errrr, afaik it's gotta be one of em... maybe ring your local council or search on their website?

Utility bill? Phone bill? Pay so much online these days It's hard to find something...bank statement? Debit card?

I would imagine that something to confirm your identity would suffice

Strawbezza · 05/05/2010 21:21

You don't need any ID. Just give your name and address and you can vote.

CatIsSleepy · 05/05/2010 21:22

is that right strawbezza? you don't need anything? how bizzarre

WitchBoxToX · 05/05/2010 21:22

how bout your council tax bill?

MrsLiberalTheWaitress · 05/05/2010 21:23

I think in NI you need ID. I looked at a voting website that had a patronising little animation about how to vote. If you're in England, then you certainly need nothing except your name and address and the right polling station!

moaningminniewhingesagain · 05/05/2010 21:25

this is it, no ID needed unless in NI.

ASecretLemonadeDrinkerDAVE · 05/05/2010 21:26

But I could go in and out with wigs on pretending to be my neighbours....

I will bring a bagful of bills and what not... cannot find anything on the website bar having your polling card will save time (gah!)

HOW DO I VOTE?
Those registered to vote should be sent a polling card about a week before the election, naming your polling station. You should take the card with you to vote, although it is not compulsory. No other form of identification is required, except in Northern Ireland.

from BBC....

You need nothing. It does seem odd, but there you go.

EddieIzzardismyhero · 05/05/2010 21:28

I asked the electoral man today (cos we haven't been sent our polling cards ) and he said the reason you don't need ID is cos it would disenfranchise those who don't have any ID.

Does seem strange in this day and age though.

snickersnack · 05/05/2010 21:29

You definitely do not need anything. I can confirm that as I actually went to our council office this morning and spoke to the woman in Electoral Services as our polling cards haven't arrived. She was singularly uninterested, but did say I should just turn up and give my name and address - no ID needed, as long as I'm on the register.

Am convinced dh and I are going to be the victims of electoral fraud as a result. Have told him I will be at the polling station when it opens, will vote then hang round looking for anyone suspicious until he has a chance to get there and vote. He thinks I'm crazy, but I reckon if you're motivated enough to steal someone's voting card, you're probably motivated enough to get up early to vote...

vesela · 05/05/2010 22:23

according to some survey, four in ten people think they need their polling card to vote, so get the message round that they don't...

EddieIzzardismyhero · 06/05/2010 08:19

Depends whether I want them to vote or not .
