I live in a traditionally Tory area. However, in 2005, Libdems nearly got it. Labour lagged far behind.

I want Labour to stay in as leaders of the country.

The only way to promote that around here would be to vote lib dem, so that Tories lose the seat.

So, do I vote with my conscience, knowing it is a wasted vote (Labour aren't going to get our seat)?
Or do I play the long-game and focus on getting the Tories out?

I would vote tactically, and have done, under very similar circumstances.

bumpybecky · 04/05/2010 12:07

I'd vote Lib Dem in that situation.

Poledra · 04/05/2010 12:09

I'd vote tactically in your situation. Am in a very similar situation, but Labour have made it easy for me by putting in a no-hoper of a candidate anyway

To be fair, even the LibDems have a cat's chance in hell of breaking the Tory stronghold in this area- how on earth did I end up living here?

helyg · 04/05/2010 12:10

I would vote Lib Dem.

OtterInaSkoda · 04/05/2010 12:22

I would (and have in the past) voted Lib Dem.

electra · 04/05/2010 12:23

In your position I would vote Libdem for sure.

Vote Lib Dem definitely, best chance of keeping the Tory out where you are.

HappyMrsChicken · 04/05/2010 12:29

I would vote Lib Dem. In fact, I am going to tactically vote Lib Dem myself. It's a pretty strong Tory seat here and Labour have got no chance so am hoping against hope that maybe the Lib Dems have.

weegiemum · 04/05/2010 12:30

I also would vote tactically.

Hassled · 04/05/2010 12:35

I'd vote Lib Dem, definately. I'm a Labour supporter. You have to take the view that the fewer Tory seats overall, the better.

Fennel · 04/05/2010 13:03

Yes I'm in that situation too and am voting libdem, so are all the other labour and green party members and supporters I know in this area. It was a wrench to get my head round the idea. Having always said I'd never support the libdems who I see as far too right/centrist for my politics. But our seat is VERY marginal, quite exciting actually, so I at least get the pleasure of knowing it matters how we vote.

In the end it's a vote against the tories and hopefully if the libdems push for electoral reform we can go back to voting for the parties we prefer next time.

I do feel that labour should have done something on PR or voting reform, so in a way it's their fault none of us round here feel we can vote for them this time.

ArcticRoll · 04/05/2010 13:14

Definitely vote tactically to ensure we don't wake up on Friday with the horror of Tory government.

PinkFuschia · 04/05/2010 13:15

I would vote tactically (and have done in the past.)

gingercat12 · 04/05/2010 13:17

I would vote LibDem.

YouKnowNothingoftheCrunch · 04/05/2010 13:18

lou, I'm in a similar position however it's a close run thing between the Tories and Labour here. I'd really like to vote Lib Dem but my priority is to keep the Tories out. I don't think I'll fully make up my mind until Thursday. I keep swinging back and forth at the moment.

Lio · 04/05/2010 13:20

Lou, I am voting tactically in an effort to keep our local conservative candidate out. However, in my situation I am voting Labour when I would actually like to vote LibDem, so if you like we can consider this a 'vote swap'!

fridayschild · 04/05/2010 13:36

My dilemma in the 1989 Euro elections.... safe Tory seat, Lib Dem candidate a bit of a pompous twit, Labour ditto but less intelligent, Green was articulate, persuasive and female and really deserved my vote if my favourite party the Lib Dems weren't going to win.

I voted Lib Dem. And since as a result it was clear I would vote for any muppet with a yellow rosette, I joined the party and have been a member ever since. I know tactical voting is the way to vote my but my heart is not in it.

You have my sympathies. I actually worry about how to vote when I move house, and now I have a Lib Dem MP who is articulate, persuaive and female.

(Quick advert as I am obviously a saddo - as Fennel said, if you vote Lib Dem we might get electoral reform, and then you won't have the same dilemma next time)
