You lot don't seem to get that electoral reform really shouldn't be top of your agenda as an election issue. We're facing an economic armageddon, and you vote based on electoral reform. Just add potential political instability onto the massive economic instability that's soon to hit us.

I'm quite keen on some type of electoral reform, but this is not the time for this type of experiment. I'm also very keen not to get the type of system that we heve for our European Parliament elections which allows 5 of my 8 MEPs to completely ignore letters sent to them, unlike the typical constituency MP who is usually much more responsive.

with all due respect what bolleaux.

this is the first real opportunity in our lifetimes that where electoral reform has had a real chance of happening. the disaffection with the parliamentary expenses system has lead to a highlighting of the ineffectual (from a democratic point of view) nature of first past the post.

focus is on electoral reform for the first time and it is hard for major political leaders to dodge the issue. eg. it is very clear indeed to the electorate for the first time that the Conservatives argument against it is based on losing power base, not any kind of democratic principle.

coalition governments can and do work in many many countries both in europe and around the world. scaremongering that a hung parliament would lead to economic meltdown (as opposed to a policy for eg of 'cutting waste' i.e. doing nothing at all) is just that.

I voted the way it said but by accident. ho hum.

Can you name your European MP... without Googling? Ever met them? Ever written to one? That's the downside of PR I always think. You're allocated a representative from some list somewhere and it's all rather remote and impersonal. At least with FPTP when there was the expenses scandal (which had nothing to do with ineffective democracy and everything to do with personal dishonesty and slack practices) we knew where to find our MP so that we could jab them with a finger and force them to resign

If the Lib Dems do end up with any kind of controlling influence after today they still have to get a majority vote in the House of Commons to pass a bill for voting reform. And that means... think about it... that mostly Labour and Conservative MPs will be deciding whether it happens or not. So don't count on a hung parliament = PR just yet.

Terrible site. Why do they need my email address? They can fuck right off.

oceryo · 06/05/2010 19:23

Yes, I was put off by them wanting an email address.

Heathcliffscathy · 06/05/2010 19:28

yeah they must be charlatans this lot:

you're so right

after all, helena kennedy and polly toynbee and phillip pullman are known for their con-artist, just using your email for marketing shenanigins aren't they.

ffs

Interestingly they told me NOT to vote for Lib Dems if I wanted electoral reform

SomeGuy · 06/05/2010 19:34

btw, to save anyone the trouble, the site's advice is this:

vote for the best-placed party that is NOT the Conservatives.

So if you don't want to be spammed, that's what they'll advise.
