oh who do I vote for in Brighton-Labour or Green?

I still haven't made my mind up. I want to avoid the Tories controlling my area. The Labour leaflets of course say in order to do that we MUST vote for them. The Greens say the bookies money is on them. So who to believe? I can choose between Caroline Lucas or Nancy Platt both of whom I have no real objections to. Oh what to do.

Sounds like you have to work out which is more likely to win. Have there been any polls?

Takver · 03/05/2010 19:55

I would be inclined to vote Green - it looks like Caroline Lucas has a real chance.

inveteratenamechanger · 03/05/2010 20:09

An ICM poll at the end of last year found that the Greens were 7 points ahead of the Tories.

Lots of internet chatter at this site - most seem to think that Greens wil take it.

The independent on Sunday says vote Green to keep the Tories out.

But TBH it's probably worth looking at their policies and deciding which reflect your views the most.

post · 03/05/2010 20:09

there are tactical voting sites, which will tell you who's ahead in the polls. I hear in brighton pavilion it's between tories and green, so yes, green.

policywonk · 03/05/2010 20:11

Think it's correct to say that the bookies think the Greens will win it.

I can't imagine Pavilion would go Tory - there'd be a crusty uprising of massive proportions

iheartdusty · 03/05/2010 20:16

yes yes yes Green.

if I lived in Pavilion I would vote Green as many times as I could.

alas I am in Hove and may have to vote for the warmongering party of lies Lab just to avoid the Tories getting in. (Last time was 12k Tory 12.5k Labour 8k LibDem).

kerstina · 03/05/2010 21:13

Yes you are so lucky to have a Green candidate that is likely to get in. Wish it was the same for the rest of the country !

ArcticRoll · 04/05/2010 13:42

Labour-no point in having Green MP in Brighton if Tories get in nationally.
Also really concerned that many traditional Labour voters here are moving across to Greens which could let Tories in here.

noddyholder · 04/05/2010 13:44

caroline Lucas is v likely to get in She is great and has a lot of support here

EricNorthmansmistress · 04/05/2010 15:23

Are you in Pavillion? If so, vote Green. In Hove, it's a toss up (for me) between tactically voting Labour or voting LibDem. Green would be a wasted vote. The margin between Lab and Con in Kemptown was larger in the last general election so there you might not have to worry so much about a Tory maj but there is still the tactical option there.

EricNorthmansmistress · 04/05/2010 15:25

there are tactical voting sites, which will tell you who's ahead in the polls - can I have a link please?

darcymum · 04/05/2010 15:28

Green

iheartdusty · 04/05/2010 21:46

EricNorthmansmistress I have now decided I will vote LibDem (in Hove). I have voted Labour all my life but I just can't do it this time.
Bah to tactical voting. I won't cast a vote based on what I think others will do. Worst case scenario, Cons get in but have a diminished majority, LibDem make huge advances and next time we are closer to electoral reform, forcing change in all parties.

EricNorthmansmistress · 04/05/2010 21:50

I like your style iheartdusty. I think I'll join you. I know two other people in Hove who are voting LibDem and if that's representative of the population on Hove...ummmm....well there will be lots more LibDem voters! Tactical voting is voting out of fear I suppose, but I have a real fear :-/

iheartdusty · 04/05/2010 21:52

yes I know what you mean

SirBoobAlot · 04/05/2010 22:03

Any suggestion for Kemptown? Must admit am pretty disgusted there is a UKIP candidate standing - and that he is a doctor

EricNorthmansmistress · 04/05/2010 22:30

Hopefully the UKIP bloke will perform a service in stealing away some of the more rabid tories and getting them to waste their votes on him! Although there was a proliferation of independents and small single issue party MPs while Lab were safely in power, this time I don't think many will get many votes. I have always voted Green, not anymore. You have the same issue in Kemptown, the margin between Lab and Tory was larger there in the last GE but who knows what will happen this time. It's a vote for Lab to try to keep tories out, or a voye for LibDem to try to make history and get a LibDem MP and possibly Parliament, or a vote for Tory if that floats your boat

SirBoobAlot · 04/05/2010 22:49

This is my first time voting - I have taken a mild interest in politics before, but now having DS and being on benefits am rather overwhelmed by it all!

blondewoman · 04/05/2010 22:55

I am in terror of another Tory government after living through the last one - the rich look after themselves and the poor and needy get more so. I want to vote labour but would vote green or lib dem if it kept the blues out. I am really confused by the polls. Can anyone point me to a reliable website to help with my tactical voting dilemma?

Spidermama · 04/05/2010 23:03

Green.

Labour are indulging in some nasty tricks here telling lies. It's not true that a Green vote will let the Tories in and it's also not true that Greens have only cooperated on the council with the Tories.

I've been apalled at the literature coming from Ms Platt's camp.

Spidermama · 04/05/2010 23:07

It's a great ward to be living in and watching if you're interested in politics. A four way marginal where all of the candidates are women. Very unusual. Perhaps unique.

elkiedee · 04/05/2010 23:08

I'd better be honest and declare that I'm a mostly Labour voter (with occasional diversions for Socialist Alliance/Respect/Ken Livingstone as an independent - generally I wouldn't vote for "independents" because they're either right wing or egomaniacs or both. (Ken probably fits into latter category but it was politically justified nonetheless!)

My MP is fairly safe, and on best political fit I'd probably vote for the Trade Union and Socialist Coalition, but I'm voting for my Labour MP for the first time and that's a sort of tactical vote. Nick Clegg has effectively declared that if Labour comes third in overall vote he will look to the Tories to form a coalition government.

I work for a Council where Lib Dems are the biggest party, Tories the smallest and they have gone into coalition, and the policies are basically Tory ones. Lots of cuts and HUGE increases in charges for various services paid by working poor and other poor not reliant on means tested benefits to keep Council tax down.

I don't like the Lib Dems anyway, but it seems pretty clear to me that it's a case of Vote Clegg, get Cameron. I expect lots of people will jump on me for this, but please look at their record in local government before believing they're nice guys.

I guess Labour are the devil I know this time.

elkiedee · 04/05/2010 23:11

The Green Party's record in local government is mixed. Where I work the 3 Green Councillors have been good, actively opposing the Lib Dem/Tory administration with Labour, and often getting in ahead. In my home city, Leeds, they joined the coalition with the Lib Dems and Tories to implement cuts in jobs and services.

I don't know what they've been like in Brighton.

majormoo · 04/05/2010 23:13

thanks for your thoughts everyone. Yes am in Pavillion and have been bombarded by leaflets by Labour saying a Green vote could let the Tories in-which is what I most fear.
