Anyone else wish the political parties would stop putting things through their door?

Seriously, it is Bank Holiday Monday and guess what... we have just received what must be something like our hundreth piece of post from the Lib Dems! A "hand written" letter addressed "dear friend" no less!

We have received enough of this rubbish from both Tories and Lib Dem to fill our recycling box! Do they really think that I can be so easily swayed? They obviously don't know that I would be more impressed if they didn't print loads of stuff because they were thinking of the environment! Quite tempted to send it all back!

Oh, and as for the Lib Dems... for some reason I don't appear on their radar as an individual... all post has been addressed to DP or to both of us so I'm obviously not worth writing to...

(just noticed that the handwritten envelope has my full name on but just DPs first inital and surname...)

YABU - there have been other people on MN complaining that they don't know enough about their local candidate - how else do they tell you about themselves?

jeee · 03/05/2010 11:57

My eight year old DS, OTOH, was thrilled when our local conservative candidate addressed an envelope to him.

AuntieMaggie · 03/05/2010 12:01

I agree that people ned to know but seriously - that many leaflets, letters, newspapers?

Just supports the fact that the enviroment isn't very high on these parties agendas to me...

Your eight year old? Trying to brainwash them early then?

Yes, now he's walking about in full tory-boy mode.

Actually, for some reason he has decided that lib-dems are the party to vote for.

AuntieMaggie · 03/05/2010 12:04

lol that's cute

Can I put in a word for the 'other' parties. Being excluded from the big debates, ignored by most of the press and media, they have no other way of getting their message to you. It is not possible to knock on every door when you have around 40,000 households in your constituency. I do not mind having political leaflets through the door as they are of more interest to me than the endless roof repair, double glazing, home insurance and religious ones.

Just use to light the fire or shred them and put into the compost - reuse or recycle.

vesela · 03/05/2010 13:08

hear hear, Granny.

Plus when you consider the mountain of smears there have been against the Lib Dems, you can't blame them for wanting to deliver messages through your door.

Not enough media attention - need to leaflet.

Too much Murdoch attention - need to leaflet!

Re. whose names are on the leaflets - they'll have been addressed by volunteers using the electoral register, and some people's names only appear on the register as an initial, some in full. If there were more than three or four voters at one house with the same name, we just used to write "The XY family."

Re. the things with just your DP's name - that would probably be the freepost? the one that every party gets delivered for free. That just goes to one of the electors, and the Lib Dems don't get to decide who - usually the first one on the register I think?

whostolemyname · 03/05/2010 13:18

YANBU. We have had at least one leaflet a day for the last two weeks from the lib dems and tories. They clearly dont have environmental issues at the top of their list!

I don't mind that Granny - I've only had a couple of leaflets from the other parties and welcome them

It's the bombardment of the Lib Dems and Tories I take offence to of the same leaflet as well!

We have four voters registered in this house (though DD is also registered at her university address and will vote there) so we get a forest's worth of leaflets. I did intend to keep them all to see how big the pile will get, but DH didn't realise & took my whole collection to the recycling last weekend.

I find it interesting that none of the canvassers have ever asked to speak to any of the other voters in the house, seeming happy with the reply of whoever answers the door, even if it's an obviously hungover teenager....

vesela · 03/05/2010 13:50

that's strange - I always try and talk to the other people in the house, if I can. It's maybe easier when phone canvassing, though.

GrendelsMum · 03/05/2010 18:40

Can't you put a sign on the door to say that you don't want any leaflets?

alysonpeaches · 03/05/2010 21:58

Our dog sorts them, he has loved this election, more junk mail to savage. He is happy to come round to yours and rip it to shreds.

BelleDameSansMerci · 03/05/2010 22:01

I have only had leaflets from the Green Party. Which were delivered by a chap driving a four wheel drive. Honestly.
