Lefties: What are you going to do on May 7 if the Tories get in?

allegrageller · 03/05/2010 11:32

because I think I am going to organise a mass black-clad march of teachers, nurses, mental health workers and all other good low-paid people of this earth to Downing Street chanting 'we who are about to be sacked salute you'

either that or I shall just follow my original plan as per the depressed lefties thread which was to tar and feather myself and go around the streets of SE London in a cart with a bell shouting 'bring out your dead public sector workers'.

Which do you prefer? Any ideas of your own?

"We are saved from terrorist threat on a daily basis by our government"

I don't know what to say to nonsense like that. Apart from were you around when the IRA were active?

Afghanistan? Fighting for what? Spell it out. The problems in Afghanistan, including the former allies on the religious right, are multi-generational and cannot be solved by arms. You don't like what is the Taliban? What about Saudi Arabia? You don't care about Saudi Arabia, what about Burma? You don't care about Burma, what about the slaughter of 250,000 Chechens by Russia...it goes on...

The UK army isn't in Afghanistan to do anything other than project western power into the region. It's about controlling central Asia for western interests.

Iraq: even, and i say even, if the politicians genuinely believed the info they had (and they did not the Bush admin wanted to invade Iraq whatever happened) making a mistake is still a crime. If you see a man in the street and you think he has a gun, you beat him to death, he doesn't have a gun, then saying "i did what i thought was right" is not a defence. It is an admission of guilt.

allegrageller · 03/05/2010 18:06

get off your soapbox Coolfonz. This thread, if you read it, is not actually about anyone defending the war. I marched against it and was ignored. Bush and Blair were indeed murderous fanatics.

This need not mean that I welcome the Tories in- far from it.

For clarity the Tories are also maniacs.

Do you want Maniac A or Maniac B?

Tortington · 03/05/2010 18:17

try nice mr c for clegg

allegrageller · 03/05/2010 18:21

well, that is my point exactly CF. Your rants have been misdirected.

Frankly I think Maniac B (Cameron) will be far, far worse- and a long Tory history of meanminded decimation of public services and enrichment of the already filthy rich (now made more so, indeed, by New Labour) backs the point up.

Whatever party gets in will bring in cuts. Harsh ones. DO you all seriously think a LibDem/Labour coalition wouldn't do the same?

And why should the public sector be immune from the pay freezes and pensions cuts the rest of us have had to put up with?

Coolfonz · 03/05/2010 18:32

The Tories may be marginally worse for the British poor than Labour over the lifetime of the next parliament. But if Labour are elected they will also have to cut public services - as it was they who bailed out private banking.

Labour missed huge opportunities to reform economics in the UK, instead they propped up real power - banking - and passed the cost onto the public. Us.

My main gripe is the notion that Labour represent lefties.

The Liberals? Yes they are to the left of Labour and the Tories. But what they will do if/when they get to power is another matter. Power corrupts, i think that should be obvious.

Tortington · 03/05/2010 18:37

im liking this doom and gloom approach,

let me get this right i shall paraphrase you

tories no better than labour and labour shower of shyte. libs will be just like the rest of the useless bastards.

great.

allegrageller · 03/05/2010 18:38

abr1de- put it another way: why should key workers who already work damn hard for crap pay have to pay further for the massive financial f*ups caused by an utterly corrupt private financial sector? Who will not be suffering 'pay freezes and pension cuts' methinks.

And it isn't the public servants who will suffer most- it will be the most vulnerable, because the Tories don't like vulnerable. Single parents(although no doubt the arguments for why they deserve to suffer will be up next); the mentally ill, whose services are about to be slashed (no doubt so they can better support themselves); in fact, probably anyone ill (weak! not helping themselves!!) already struggling community services. Ad nauseam.

Tories 'marginally worse for the British poor'- heh, that one's worth a hollow laugh.

Labour don't represent me btw. I'm a socialist and I'm under no illusions that they are a socialist party. I would vote for Clegg if I thought it would keep the Tories out.

Can I alert you all to Malcolm Tucker's FB status. Nil desperandum, etc .

overthemill · 03/05/2010 18:44

don't know yet, it is so different from 13 years ago isn't it? Maybe look at emigration?

KayHarker · 03/05/2010 18:45

I love hearing about PolciyWonk's mum.

I shall, well, I don't know, actually.

smallishsheep · 03/05/2010 18:49

Yep, I love policywonk's mum too
I was thinking today actually, after a rather heated thread yesterday, just how much I personally have benefitted under the Labour govt. Big things like tax credits, help getting back to work, quick access to mental health services when I really needed it, that I would be heartbroken if others in my position did not get the same in the future. If the tories do get in, I will not hesitate to join the local labour party I well remember when they got in 13 years ago, I had just started a fully paid for place at private school and one of the first things they did was to stop assisted places. I always thought I'd never forgive them for that. Things change.

Hassled · 03/05/2010 18:49

PW - your Mum sounds like a top woman. And I think I shall do the same - less armchair winging, more activism. I need to get off my butt and actually become involved.

smallishsheep · 03/05/2010 18:50

(and kay, I pomised to look up something for you yesterday. As soon as dd is in bed, I'm on it )

Tortington · 03/05/2010 18:50

imvotin for clegg, im fed up of this shit where my vote doesn;t count becuase everyone votes red or blue - my vote does fucking count. and yours would too if you used it how your heart tells you too.

labout are indeed a shower of shyte and tories will make poor people very poor indeed. my very bones tell me lib dems are the way to go for this country, and if the tories get in, then i will have voted the way that i wanted to, that i thought about and decided best. i refuse after the history of the working classes that brought the vote to me, to waste it on something i do not wholeheartedly believe in

happikidz · 03/05/2010 19:03

Don't talk about fighting in 6 months time. Fight now!

I have seen what 13 years of investment in public services can do and it sickens to me to think about it being ripped apart by a bunch of smiling thugs.

policywonk · 03/05/2010 19:09

Thanks for all the nice comments about my mother

Agree re. Labour's record on tax credits. I think they haven't been shouting enough about this. It was only when ex-DP and I split that I realised how incredible the provision is for single mothers now, especially if you work. Most people just aren't aware of it, because they're not in that situation. But it makes a huge difference to the prospects of the children of one-parent families.

Habbibu · 03/05/2010 19:16

Great link, Hassled.

Rather shallowly, there's a tiny bit of me looking forward to the idea that the tories would have to be on the defensive if they got on - no more jibing about how marv they would be in power, just having to answer as to why they're not. But it's small consolation.

Agree about your mum, pw! I see a long viking MN memory growing.

And hello! Kay.

b4real · 03/05/2010 20:20

allegragelleryou could possibly hang each other, this would put you out of your misery?

Habbibu · 03/05/2010 20:21

Anyone up for more poster fun in the meantime?

fifitot · 03/05/2010 20:23

I currently have my head in my hands after reading some of the delusional crap on other threads about how great it is going to be under the Tories. FFS. Anyone who lived through the 1980s and remembers the mess the UK was in.........how the hell can they justify voting for that shower. Words fail me.

Nymphadora · 03/05/2010 20:32

Scotland and Wales. They have a lack of Conservatives so we all need to move.

Habbibu · 03/05/2010 20:39

Scotland actively seeking immigrants, Nympha!

allegrageller · 03/05/2010 21:01

b4real, would rather go out with more of a bang
