Election talk in school

My son goes to a large state secondary in Brighton. He's in year 7. I am really surprised that the election has not been mentioned in any of his classes. We talk about it a fair bit at home and he has watched the leaders debates. I remember my school holding a mock election on election day. Is this the norm?

No mention I meant, not the mock election!

That's interesting. Hadn't thought of that. I was at school in 70's and 80's. I suppose year 7 are quite young. Thank you

I did a mock election at school in 1987 - I was in Y10 at the time. I wrote the speeches and someone more charismatic than me was the candidate - we won!

I agree that there is a need to be careful in order not to indoctrinate, but I think it can be a really useful exercise in learning about persuasive language, debate etc., as well as learning about politics.

I don't remember it ever being mentioned when I was at school, except for a citizenshoip lesson in Y11 where we were debating whether 16 year olds should be allowed to vote.

I never discussed politics with my parents either so I was a bit stuck when it came to voting for the first time although quite glad in a way not to have a bias one way or another!

ds1 & 3 have a mock election at school. The candidates are 6th formers, all 3 main parties plus a green.

I'm surprised any school would discourage it, surely its all part of citizenship/PSE,

I had one at school so did dh. Tuesday's assembly is where all 4 candidates get to give a speech on their manifesto. Whole school talking about it.
