Smallwhitecat How true.

Holland75 · 29/04/2010 16:24

I feel very sorry for him, it was a daft mistake. The pressure he must be under at the moment.

Granny23 · 29/04/2010 16:34

QS" why do you think most labour party core voters are bigots, and associate themselves with bigotry?" It was not me that said this it was Gordon Brown! Maybe ask him why he considers his own life long supporters to be bigots.

I personally welcome 'foreign' incomers to my area/village on a 'variety is the spice of life' basis. I have, however, never had to face up to being 'swamped' by another culture becoming predominant in what I consider to be my home area. A bigot is someone who unreasonably labels people they do not know, according to their percieved ethnic, religious or racial characteristics. I do not think the term 'bigot' can be applied so readily to people who have seen their way of life seriously eroded by real, day to day, changes in their area, that leave them feeling that they are now in a minority.

crystal123 · 29/04/2010 16:42

GRANNY Brown could not have answered her question in any other way, there is not a limit to the number of people who can come here from within the EU. 28 countries belong inside the EU, and 8 more are waiting to join, total (pop. 157 million), even if a fraction arrive and Claig gives his Amnesty it will mean millions more people on these shores. Mrs. Duffy will really find out then, and the people of Rochdale will certainly not "like it up em".

fembear · 29/04/2010 16:43

"I feel very sorry for him, it was a daft mistake. The pressure he must be under at the moment."

I cannot believe that people are making comments like this. He is the Prime Minister. He has his finger on the Big Red Button. He makes life and death decisions. He is supposed to represent us on the world stage.
If he is going to crumble over some barracking from a harmless nobody then god help us all.

crystal123 · 29/04/2010 16:48

I meant CLEGG and not CLAIG!

claig · 29/04/2010 16:48

well said fembear. I wonder if he feels as sorry for us as many on here feel sorry for him. I wonder if he feels sorry about what he said about Mrs. Duffy or just feels sorry for himself.

crystal123 · 29/04/2010 16:50

FEMBEAR I do agree with you, much more news should be given to the terrible financial crisis we now face.

fembear · 29/04/2010 16:52

"much more news should be given to the terrible financial crisis we now face"

True. It's the elephant in the room. The debate tonight should be interesting.

fyimate · 29/04/2010 17:14

Nope, shows his true colours.

2old4thislark · 29/04/2010 17:48

just shows him to be the a*hole I always thought he was.

And shows why we have had such increasing levels of immigration. As soon as anyone challenges it, they are called a bigot.

pourmeanotherglass · 29/04/2010 18:39

I feel sorry for his aides - I can understand anyone wanting to let off steam when they get back into the car and think they are off air, but it sounds like he was looking for someone to blame and shout at.

I agree it should never have been broadcast though

vesela · 29/04/2010 18:51

pourmeanotherglass - Andrew Rawnsley makes that blame point too in his Guardian article here

(has anyone read Rawnsley's The End of the Party, btw? Is it good? I fancy buying it once the dust settles...)

ElenorRigby · 29/04/2010 19:08

Really disturbing thread...

Helium · 29/04/2010 19:11

I feel sorry for him too - think its quite funny really and VERY much like The Thick of it (series two episode 1!!). AM a floating voter - quite likely to go Labour though.

ElenorRigby · 29/04/2010 19:16

sorry only read the first few pages of the thread, seems to have got better later on.

Utter madness to feel sorry for Gordo lol.
He showed his true colours.
So he labelled a lifelong active supporter as bigot because she expressed concern about about the number of immigrants allowed to live and work here.
I have no words to describe this low life khdkghdkgh...

piscesmoon · 29/04/2010 19:31

I think it was funny-it shows the whole hypocrisy of politicians.

Chrysanthamum · 29/04/2010 19:38

Not much sympathy from me. Personally I think he's got no charisma and not much backbone.
I do think he has got his work cut out for him though and sorting the UK out will require huge strength of character and acumen.
Saying that I can't stand D Cameron so might plump for old Nick.

doggiesayswoof · 29/04/2010 20:08

fembear, he didn't "crumble"

He made a comment in private.

He sounded tired and fed up.

When I watched it (after reading the transcript) I was struck by his body language at the moment she made the immigrants comment - he sort of shied away from her and started talking over her, he looked annoyed but trying to cover it up

I get the impression he is genuinely repulsed by xenophobia and I like that in a person tbh

I am not saying mrs duffy is xenophobic btw - I do think her comment came across as bigoted though

I will not vote for him or the other main parties - I am not a GB supporter by any means

Xenia · 29/04/2010 20:09

His initial interview went well but he thought it was bad so that means bad judgment. It also shows he cannot take criticism. The incident also confirmed views about his depression, temper and bullying and he looks absolutely terrible most of the time too. He is not a well man. Anyway thank goodness he said it - he's done most of us a huge benefit.

doggiesayswoof · 29/04/2010 20:13

"The incident also confirmed views about his depression, temper and bullying"

I didn't see evidence of any of that in his comments, his tone etc. You see what you want to see in people I suppose.

girliefriend · 29/04/2010 20:14

I do feel a teeny bit sorry for the bloke - bet he woke up this morning thinking please let it be just a bad dream. It did however make me giggle for quite a while!!!

RunawayWife · 29/04/2010 20:20

I feel more sorry for the Tory bloke who just knocked on the door, had a lovely chat and answered questions....as I shut the door I remembered I am in my PJs and I have no bra on (I have a large chest too )

MrsForgetful · 29/04/2010 20:27

and did i hear correctly on Radio4 ... Gillian is sitting in the front row of the debate tonight?????
