My Dh and I will be voting differently. Is this odd?

We have a house near us with two huge Lib Dem placards and two huge Labour placards in the front garden.

StrictlyKatty · 27/04/2010 21:36

DH will vote LD, if we were still in Scotland he'd vote Scottish Socialist

I'll be voting Tory We have extreemely different political views! He wants totally open borders, I want a huge cut in immigration etc.

We also have different religious views, we differ on private education... Sometimes I look at him and think 'I hate everything you stand for' and sometimes that is pretty hard tbh.

Fennel · 27/04/2010 21:38

We always vote in the same general direction but might differ on occasion on the best way to achieve our similar goals - whether to vote tactically for a second choice party or to vote for the party we really prefer.

I couldn't have a partner who voted the opposite to me, it would be a deal-breaker (along with lots of other things I couldn't put up with, it's surprising I'm with anyone really).

hatwoman · 27/04/2010 21:38

firsttimemama - it's an interesting question and I'd thought about starting a thread on it myself. dh and I share basic values, and some of our views on how to implement them - but sometimes political debate between us can get very heated. and, tbh, sometimes I worry that we're somehow incompatible. and I kind of assumed that every other couple lived in some form of political harmony and dh and I were somehow ill-adjusted and all wrong. I feel reassured now!

mumblechum · 27/04/2010 21:41

Sounds normal to me. DH is abroad for the election and cba to organise a proxy vote, but normally we vote differently or the same depending on how we feel at the time.

mumblechum · 27/04/2010 21:41

DH thinks I'm barking because I don't think I'll vote for dc now because of the foxhunting thing.

firsttimemama · 27/04/2010 21:42

OMG StrictlyKatty that is pretty funny - probably not for you. Me and DH are a bit like this he's turned Tory and I'm a liberal leftie, as he puts it. (I don't deny it)

I am labour, DP wants to vote Lib Dem as he believes in the third way . However we live in a hotly contsted tory/labour marginal, so am trying to persuade him that his vote would be wasted on Lib Dem, so to vote labour.

DP (and DD) think I am being manipulative in suggesting tactical voting.

We talk about politics a lot.

GetOrfMoiLand · 27/04/2010 21:44

I could not live with a tory voter. No way.

Fennel · 27/04/2010 21:45

We save our serious rows for the cleaning. Politically we are harmonious. But the cleaning rows can be extremely bitter.

firsttimemama · 27/04/2010 21:45

I'm glad you feel better Hatwoman -I'm really surprised about how many couples differ. I think the rival placards are very funny too.

OMG I just read back on Granny23's post - that is outrageous!

Serious he drives me mad! We don't agree on anything right now. He goes pale when I say I think the Tories have gone too far towards the centre for my tastes

My great dream is to be an MP (not for the expenses!) and he always says he'll run against me Where is the support eh?!

Greensleeves · 27/04/2010 21:54

fennel pmsl at you and your cleaning rows

our house looks like it has been put through a giant blender

dh voted LibDem once, I still haven't forgiven him

but as a rule, we are politically compatible - like fennel, we may not actually end up voting for the same party, but we have the same aims in mind.

StrictlyKatty · 27/04/2010 21:58

When we're in the car we look at for 'our' type of posters in people's gardens and get really annoyed if one has more than the other!

nappyzoneloveslindor · 27/04/2010 22:04

I am vocal in our house about my opinions on the varying parties and politicians and try and persuade dh my way is the right way but i know he will vote probs for a differing party. On the day he wont tell me anyway as he likes to keep the secret voting thing up.

HappyMummyOfOne · 28/04/2010 10:13

We will be voting different too I expect, I'm a Tory fan and always have been but suspect DH will vote for the lib dems although he hasnt actually said.
