How do I engage the bin lids?

My stepchildren are 21 and 18. Neither of them has voted in a general election before and they don't bother with the local elections either.

They have been brought up in an environment where voting has not been seen as an imperative and they are not engaged with any current affairs or politics. In fact I asked the younger one who she might be voting for and she said what am I supposed to be voting for anyway . I started on the 'it's your democratic responsibility, woman have died to give you the vote, everything you do from dawn till dusk is influenced by who is in power' and I tried to give an overview of what the parties generally stand for, but you could see I had already lost her...

How do I sell the idea of voting to this age group? I've looked at the 'who should I vote for' surveys but they are not arsed about inheritance tax or national debt. What can I do to convince them that it's important to join in the democratic process?
