Embarrassingly stupid question about registering to vote

I know, I am lacking a bit in the intelligence stakes here, but do you have to actively opt in to vote or is it automatic?

I have been to the 'about your vote' website and filled out my details and downloaded the form to sign and send in, but I am just wondering if this is an unnecessary exercise?

I have never voted before but this year I want to so don't want to miss out!

TIA

It's not automatic - if you've never registered before, you need to send in the form.

Ah, OK thanks Vesela.

I had a voting slip come through when I was 18 and still at home, but nothing since.

I'll get it signed and sent off then!

Thanks again.

If it's an old form it might be outdated- call you local county council and they will send one out to you with you dtails filled in, so it gets processd in time. Or I think directgov website has online forms?

Hi seashells, I found the form on this website via my local council website.

I gather this should be the latest one?

Looks like it should be- I'm desperately trying to get registered too as I've relocated and want to vote!

Embarassingly stupid question no.2

I have received a voting card for our local elections on may6, does this mean I am already registered to vote in the general election too?

nappyzoneloveslindor · 10/04/2010 19:08

scrudd if your on the electoral register and your eligible to vote in ge and local elecs then yup. Also if youve moved but in same constituency you can vote at your old polling station - you dont need the card to vote.
