Foul language on Mumsnet…

Having newly registered with Mumsnet I am dismayed, after perusing uTube and other forum sites where obscenities constantly pop up, to note use of foul language on this ?family site?.

I reported the swearing, specifically, where ?arseholes? was utilised as a reference to political parties.

The return I got from Mumsnet HQ was ??we don't think we
should be the arbiters of what people should find offensive and what
they shouldn't.? and ??We generally find it's better to let the boards self-
police??

May I engage you all in a quick survey?

Hands up all those that deem ?ARSEHOLES? as an offensive expression that should not be used on these boards??

oh, on a serious note, can I just point out that whilst MumsNet is a "family site" - you don't really think that our two / three /four etc year olds come on here to bitch about David Cameron do you?

I agree with Microbe. If you know what fuck,anal,arse etc mean it just sounds silly and rather unnecessary to use them out of context. In times of stress no objection to "bloody hell" but as an adjective these words just sound rather unpleasant.

It's not a family site. It's a parents' site. Parents tend to be grown ups. I don't swear in conversation when my dd is around, but it's jolly nice to let off steam here.

I wonder how much Mumsnet management would like this thread reprinted in the paper? can we really believe that people think Mumsnet is influential? mostly it's just childish and foul mouthed, and bullying

I opened this thread because I was hoping to add my name to a list of other grown-up people who also don't like to see swearing on forums, but I see that I'm in the minority. I'm also not happy about the abusive replies that some people have given to the original poster of this thread.

However, I've checked the Mumsnet policy and it includes the phrase: "we don't tolerate any unnecessarily abusive postings", which implies that ordinary abusive postings are OK!

Luckily my real-life friends don't use foul language and nor do the other parenting forums that I visit (so far, anyway), so maybe this one is just for a different type of person than myself.

I won't give up visiting just yet though, as some of the topics are really interesting.

Mumsnet is a site for parents (i.e adults) it is not a family site. If you want cutesy and wholesome visit Disney.com.
