Foul language on Mumsnet…

Microbe · 19/01/2010 00:38

Having newly registered with Mumsnet I am dismayed, after perusing uTube and other forum sites where obscenities constantly pop up, to note use of foul language on this ?family site?.

I reported the swearing, specifically, where ?arseholes? was utilised as a reference to political parties.

The return I got from Mumsnet HQ was ??we don't think we
should be the arbiters of what people should find offensive and what
they shouldn't.? and ??We generally find it's better to let the boards self-
police??

May I engage you all in a quick survey?

Hands up all those that deem ?ARSEHOLES? as an offensive expression that should not be used on these boards??

Thank you?

Hands up those that deem ?ARSEHOLES? inoffensive??

Thanks?

Looks like you arseholes have it!

NewYearNewKnickers0nMaHead · 19/01/2010 00:47

Actually, I think this is a very Cuntish thread.

Quattrocento · 19/01/2010 00:49

Microbe - you are multiplying

Are you that very boring troll who kept on starting a zillion unfunny threads?

I'll remind you that the first duty of a troll is to be funny?

FromGirders · 19/01/2010 00:50

And for a third time . . .

Off you fuck.

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 19/01/2010 00:50

My advice, when picking a forum to hang out in, pick one that suits you. DOnt try to change one to suit you.

Have you missed the friday night arse hole speciality thread then? They'll be right upi yuor street.

Be a love and try this link might suit you a bit better. If you do return from the dark side could you discover a SOH? There's a dear.

Philip Larkin - This Be The Verse

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself.

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 19/01/2010 00:55

heQet · 19/01/2010 07:38

Oh, I can't be bothered.

See other posts.

ShinyAndNew · 19/01/2010 07:47

I agree. Arsehole is a terrible word.

Anal space is a much better, nicer insult. We should all start using that instead.

ooo shit fucks, I spilt my Tea... rubbish

OnlyWantsOneFartleBerry · 22/01/2010 22:15

oh, on a serious note, can I just point out that whilst MumsNet is a "family site" - you don't really think that our two / three /four etc year olds come on here to bitch about David Cameron do you?

He is a right arse cavity.

franatash · 25/01/2010 16:44

I agree with Microbe. If you know what fuck, anal, arse etc mean it just sounds silly and rather unnecessary to use them out of context. In times of stress no objection to "bloody hell" but as an adjective these words just sound rather unpleasant.

EccentricaGallumbits · 25/01/2010 16:49

this is boring. fuckingboring.

Jux · 25/01/2010 17:08

Oh for fuck's sake. Didn't someone do this a week ago?

Get off yer arse and do something useful woman.

Jux · 25/01/2010 17:10

It's not a family site. It's a parents' site. Parents tend to be grown ups. I don't swear in conversation when my dd is around, but it's jolly nice to let off steam here.

Get thee to the washing up.

RonaldMcDonald · 25/01/2010 17:12

boring

done last week

get an original thought/life

Ferncottage · 25/01/2010 17:20

I wonder how much Mumsnet management would like this thread reprinted in the paper? can we really believe that people think Mumsnet is influential? mostly it's just childish and foul mouthed, and bullying

usualsuspect · 25/01/2010 17:23

I'm sure I've read this before

LibraryLil · 04/02/2010 22:16

I opened this thread because I was hoping to add my name to a list of other grown-up people who also don't like to see swearing on forums, but I see that I'm in the minority. I'm also not happy about the abusive replies that some people have given to the original poster of this thread.

However, I've checked the Mumsnet policy and it includes the phrase: "we don't tolerate any unnecessarily abusive postings", which implies that ordinary abusive postings are OK!

Luckily my real-life friends don't use foul language and nor do the other parenting forums that I visit (so far, anyway), so maybe this one is just for a different type of person than myself.

I won't give up visiting just yet though, as some of the topics are really interesting.

TheCrackFox · 04/02/2010 22:25

I love a bit of swearing me. TBH why is arsehole a term of abuse? You be fucked if you didn't have one.

Mumsnet is a site for parents (i.e adults) it is not a family site. If you want cutesy and wholesome visit Disney.com.

SpringHeeledJack · 04/02/2010 22:30

oh, glad to hear it, Lil

we're a bit short of sanctimonious handwringing bossy bootses here on mn

psychomum5 · 04/02/2010 22:50

oh she is winding you up to make you swear, not cos she hates it, but because in fact she wants to learn HOW to.....

poor love, she has been very sheltered after all, she deserves lots of sympathy for brain anomolies.
