£3.8 BILLION outstanding in unpaid child support

I would be interested to hear what other Mums Netters think about the fact that £3.8 billion is outstanding in unpaid child support. Figures for each area are available online.

So far no party has actually focused on tackling non payment of child support as a matter of priority - this is shame because if they did they'd get my vote.

Just think about this: what is the cost to other taxpayers, through benefit payments to lone parents that would not have been payable if the absent parent had fulfilled their financial obligations?

To what extent would child poverty in this country be reduced if that £3.8 billion was paid?!

Your thoughts?

Are you a journalist?

well you can wipe off about £4000 from that......CSA have sent me a letter (at last) saying that they've closed DS3's file, but apparently DS1 and 2's is still open........despite the fact that DH and I are very firmly back together again and I have no desire to chase him for 4k that will come out of my bank account

No I'm not - this is an issue that is important to me and it's frustrating that no Political Parties take it up.

Has this happened to you?

well they could start by getting CSA to actually chase the people that owe the money.

DH got a letter 3 weeks ago - asking him to contact them URGENTLY as they'd been trying to contact him about his payments.

Funny that it's the first letter he's had off them since last year, and he's been living at this address (where they wrote to him) since Feb this year, same numbers, same address, and he's been on benefits so DWP already had his details...........

My exh decided tostop paying maintenance a in October. Do you knwo that you have to wait 12 weeks for a case worker to be assigned to you to chase up the debt?

Adn if he misses say 4 months at £500 a month, you may have had to put this amount of stuff on credit cards, but he can then add this debt onto his total andit will probabaly be paid at about £50 a month, threby giving him an interst free loan

I'll have that £4000 ALFA!!! I haven't had a single penny from DD's father in over 3 years - CSA keep "losing" my forms.

But he'll happily stop me in the street and try and talk to DD who hides behind my back.

Only a few months ago did I get him to admit that DD is actually his, he'd denied it up til then, but still had no qualms about propositioning me for sex.

So yea, I'd like some of the money I'm owed, cos I've had eff all from him so far.

Oh no, hang on.........he once picked some daisies form the side of the road and gave them to DD.....

I think non payment of child support is theft from children and the Parent with care and should be treated as such.

I was really shocked that according to an aricle (see link below) Janet Allbeson, policy consultant for Gingerbread states:

"It would be preferable to come clean and say, 'This particular debt is not collectible any more.'"It would put a lot of lone parents with care out of their misery."

I completely disagree with this. It might be tough waiting for child support to be paid but that is no reason for us to throw our hands up and say 'Oh well they've dragged their feet and obviously aren't going to pay - we'll let them get away with it'

NO! The government should make this a priority and shame offenders.

In Australia I got my first payment within 10 days of DD's birth, he had two choices pay up or it would be deducted from his salary with his employers fully notified.
He's never missed a payment in 9 years because the humilation would be awful, why can we not do that here ?
