Kemi appears to be totally minimising Baroness Berger’s utterly horrendous experience in all this. Baroness Berger has suffered horrendous abuse and discrimination for years and years and has been so brave in standing up to it. She’s an absolute inspiration. Kemi, on the other hand, has shown herself to be yet annother example of a female Conservative Party leader not having women’s backs. Well, not all women’s backs anyway.

Why is it on KB to have black women's backs? Is it on Zach Polanski to have Jewish men's backs?

Be fair @TemperanceWest, it’s a tiny minority. I was cheered by the response of many posters who normally support her. The reaction when this news came out was virtually universally Wtf? Predictably the main cheerleader is the loudest to shout “convicted fraudster” at every opportunity over a lost phone.

I regularly post about anti semitism in the Labour party it was a massive problem. Starmer said one of his greatest achievements was reducing it. I think Kemi was completely to wrong to support putting a convicted racist into a council role.

We note of course that Burnham has just let Abbott back into the Labour party - Starmer suspended her for racism.

I have posted that I think Badenoch was wrong here. But keeping on minimizing your view of fraud when it suits you. Even Starmer agreed that fraudsters shouldn't be in Government.

My stand out story about him is the one where he broke into a police station (using his Conservative Party card to flick the lock) then came out with a full police uniform including baton and body armour just in time to advice bystanding officers that their security "is shit".

I think the TL;DR is that Kemi chose an interesting - possibly brave - case to demonstrate her deep belief in rehabilitation.

A belief that appears so deep and personal it's never been seen before.

And the controversy - as such - is really just a manifestation of a merciful society encouraging her to nurture that tiniest spark of humanity as an example to others of Christian forgiveness.

I'm glad you regularly post about anti-semitism because this sudden interest is quite revealing. If only some posters got so stuck in at other times but it's crickets when Jewish threads come up.

And would you support second chances for anyone, regardless of what they had done? Would it be acceptable for a convicted murderer or rapist to stand as a candidate for any party, for example? Or a convicted paedophile? Or are there some crimes that are simply so heinous that we might determine that the perpetrators are simply not fit for public office?

I don’t need them. You either believe in rehabilitation or you don’t. You’re trying to have it both ways.

A deep commitment to rehabilitation-except when it comes to a spent conviction for a very minor case of insurance fraud involving one personal mobile phone……Yep.
