New poll finds only privileged people will vote for Labour - but why?

This is a new IPSOS poll. It finds that among the least well off in society, support for Labour has collapsed - it's now just 10%.

Even among people who are 'just about coping' financially, they're a distant fourth in the polls, and would be wiped out if it was just them voting.

But - here's what might be surprising - among wealthy people they are first in the polls, in fact their lead is so big that if only rich people could vote, it would be a landslide for Labour.

Any thoughts as to why it is now that only the most privileged people in society are voting Labour?

Because the media view is often that Labour is the only "good" choice, and one that people will report a voting preference for?

RedTagAlan · 02/05/2026 14:10

It looks like that graph is just a data for now. Do you have any trend data ?

When you say, "Any thoughts as to why it is now that only the most privileged people in society are voting Labour?", I see no historical data on that. Is that a change or has it been constant ?

Labour always used to be the party of the working class - that's why they used to get in (MPs and councils) every time in poorer areas of the UK.

In all those poorer areas now, ie parts of Wales and northern England, they're polling so badly they could be wiped out.

I've been thinking this for ages. Labour are not seen as the party of the poor/struggling/ normal working people. Most people who are struggling will vote reform or similar. Privileged youngsters will vote green. Privileged older people, conservative. Labour voters are middle class media types, high band NHS staff, high band social care staff and an assortment of other degreed professionals. I may still vote for them and I am one of the afore listed.

EvangelinaMae · 02/05/2026 14:24

Because the shit they are causing isn't affecting rich people. Yet 🤷🏻‍♀️

Viviennemary · 02/05/2026 14:27

No surprise. Labour's policies don't give much support to hard working people struggling to pay ever increasing bills.

MabelRoyds · 02/05/2026 14:28

Labour voters are to be found en masse on Reddit. They are very very confident, have enough money and decided long ago to be Labour and arent reflective enough to adapt to changing reality of what Labour has become. They will hone in on small things to justify their heels being dug in. They are classic can’t see the wood for the tree peoole, that is indeed the essence of privelege. The luxury of pedantic myopia.

The thing is the poll says "comfortably off". Not Privileged as you say.

You are sort of re-defining terms here.

BurntBroccoli · 02/05/2026 14:45

I’m not remotely wealthy and I’m from a working class background.

I’m educated though and put myself through a degree.

Will vote for Labour.

"New poll finds only privileged people will vote for Labour - but why?"

The poll doesn't find that only privileged people will vote for Labour.

The report nor the poll mention the words privileged, rich or wealthy. Those are your words.

The categories are self reported. They make no mention of wealth, just how the individual 'feels'. So a low earner could describe themselves as Comfortably Off if they live within their means and a high earner could describe themself as Extremely Vulnerable if they are 'worried about their household's financial situation' because they have to cut back on luxuries they're used to.

I'd classify myself as financially stable and I am far from rich. I just don't spend more than I earn and I earn much less than the national average wage. That doesn't make me privileged, rich or wealthy.

Interesting that across the board the most people still think Keir Starmer is the most capable Prime Minister.

Because the Tories are a joke
Reform are a racist disaster
And the greens are too idealistic

Labour have actually done some good things while in power, considering.

They just need better PR and no Trump to deal with.

Not financially privileged at all. On benefits. Will be voting labour.

Bunfighter · 02/05/2026 14:58

Insulated from the worst effects of the cost of living crisis so don't feel the same anger towards current government. No obvious home with the Greens, Tories are toxic and really have had their chance and need to go back in their box for a while. Not going to vote Reform because not right wing.
I'm not sure what to do, I feel like the Greens in my area are not campaigning on local issues at all but at the moment it's neck and neck with them and Reform. I live in a very diverse area - both ethnically and economically. Always been a Labour area previously.
I think the cost of living thing is the main reason why people are angry at the current government.

Labour deserves to be wiped out. They've been doing absolutely nothing to help lift those poorer areas or work within the communities and nationally nothing to help poorer individuals cope with this CoL continued tsunami. This election should be a kick up the bum for Labour, but as the national party is full of greasy pole careerists, I don't expect them to learn any useful lessons from it.

RedTagAlan · 02/05/2026 14:59

ProudAmberTurtle · 02/05/2026 14:47

Who do you know who is "comfortably off" but not privileged?

I don't. That's why if I was quoting a poll I would use the same descriptive terms as the poll does. The Royal family are privileged. That is not subjective, it's a fact. But in a poll you will be asking people how they feel about their financial position. Someone on average wage might feel they are comfortably off, but someone on 250 k a year might say they are just about coping. Because it is subjective.

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 02/05/2026 15:03

@ProudAmberTurtle
Where in that last post you quoted did @IrisDaisyMarigoldLillyRosesay anything about poorer people?
Reform and Tories couldn’t care less about the poor. They would hammer benefits claimants.
The only parties who care are Labour, Lib Dem’s and the Greens.
Farage (and previously Johnson) are very clever as persuading people to vote against their best interests. Farage and his ‘man of the people’ image which is a joke.

Maybe many poorer people on benefits do not like this new breed of middle class claimants who are threatening to destroy the entire welfare state by refusing to work due to mild anxiety, and instead claim money that they do not deserve?

And maybe these poorer people aren't as thick as you seem to think they are, and aren't just conned to not vote Labour by seeing Farage drinking in a pub?
