I caught my first free bus today. It was 10 minutes late so I missed my connection. To be fair, it’s the first time EVAH in my 20 years here that a bus has been late.

MsAmerica · 02/04/2026 23:25

But you're a regular bus rider? My hope is that people who've never taken a bus in their lives might try it.

I agree. I'd love a trial period in cities where public transport was free. So many lazy people using their car when there's no need.

I'm not sure they are just lazy. I'm a regular user of free off peak bus travel. In the last few journeys I have witnessed

A full on "fuck you, no fuck you" domestic row.

Dogs that smelled so badly i was almost throwing up.

Dogs above, sat on seats. God knows what they left behind for other people to sit on.

Young woman with soles of shoes in full contact with seat. See dog remark above.

Dysfunctional people attempting to engage anyone they can make eye contact with in unwanted conversion.

Horrendous body odour.

People, not me personally (yet) unable to get a seat but clearly not really up to be standing on a moving bus.

Driver who decided to move the bus forward a couple of feet jerkily after I was out of my seat and on my feet, when I have to be extremely cautious not to aggravate shoulder issues by grabbing a pole to hold myself up.)

Mothers who block the aisle with a pushchair because the wheel/pushchair space is full. They should be told to leave the bus, but what bus driver wants to do that to an already harassed mum?

A bus on a generally very reliable service that just didn't turn up (meaning if you have an appointment to get to you need to go for a bus earlier than the one that would get you there on time, every time, just in case).

A howling gale in my face from an open window that needs to stay open or the bus would be suffocating.

Sitting sweating on a heated bus in full outdoor clothes, needed for waiting at a cold bus stop.

Walking to and from the bus stop in pouring rain. To is worse, as then your clothes are wet for whatever you are going to.

I could think of a few more, but I think that probably illustrates why people who can afford to sit alone in their own air conditioned car would do that. I catch the bus these days for entertainment, and I used to commute happily on a train route with multiple trains with seats always available, but there's no way I'd catch a bus to work if I could drive instead.

MagpiePi · 03/04/2026 09:05

I could get the bus to work but it means 2 buses, one of which is notoriously unreliable and the other is only every half hour, so it would be a minimum 50 minutes each way. Or, I can drive for 15 minutes and call in at the gym or supermarket on the way home.
Even with the high petrol prices it’s less than a pound both ways in the car versus £6 for a day bus ticket.

I prefer to use the bus or walk for other journeys but not commuting.

dwordle · 03/04/2026 14:43

But as everyone knows, there are no free rides. If they cut fuel duty they will have put taxes on something else or cut.

Starmer is attempting to preserve fuel stocks and cutting tax may have the opposite effect. Remember it's not just about the price of fuel but the availability. So in some ways the fact it's expensive will help preserve stocks.

Trump and Israel are to blame and while they continue this war things will only get worse. They will end up rationing fuel and things like foreign holidays will be cancelled.

TartanMammy · 03/04/2026 17:45

It's a nice idea, but most of the places I go are not served by public transport, or not at the times I need them. I mostly work from home but supermarket, ds1 football, ds2 basketball, my gym, golf course are all at different parts of town, none are served by a bus or a train. If they were we'd probably be hanging about in the rain/dark for ages waiting. Whereas if I jump in the car and I can be there and back quickly. Out nearest hospital is 20mins in the car or 90mins on 2 buses.

Often (women's) journeys are complex and public transport just isn't connected enough e.g. nursery drop off, to school drop off, to the office, then reverse, home, dinner. Then drop one at swimming lessons, the other at swimming, back to football, back to swimming, stop at supermarket for packed lunch things, bedtime, out to the gym.

Bus travel is free for under 21s in Scotland which is great but I still do a lot of driving teenage ds because the buses don't actually go to where he needs to be.

I think that if we were really smart we wouldn’t rely on other countries for most of our energy. We would have a decent green energy plan.

I just contacted the office of my state senator and suggested it!
