This is such an eloquent, intelligent speech! Impassioned but measured. Rare standing O definitely deserved. Canadians are so lucky to have Carney leading the country at this volatile time.

@MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack I feel as if I've missed something

I am doing that thing of listening very carefully to what's not being said as well

But I'm not telepathic. I noticed nobody really wants to address any comments on China. As I say, I'm not here to criticise. I just feel as if I'm missing something - especially as I stepped out of discussions oninternational politics for a very long time.

Or is it that the quality of politicians is so poor, we haven't heard a well structured and frank speech for a very long time? It's quite possible there have been some and I totally missed them.

rainandshine38 · 21/01/2026 16:37

I actually fancy him now. Is that shallow?

realityslapsyou · 21/01/2026 16:41

Treacling · 21/01/2026 13:47

A strategic partnership with China. Is that not a concern?

Starmer is allowing a controversial embassy to be built too.

Why is China suddenly no longer a threat?

The way I see it, Carney is not saying 'don't trade with those powerful countries', he's saying 'don't put all your eggs in one basket with them'.

And be very careful what you agree to (Trumps Peace Board, Greenland, etc) .

Whether it is or not, you are in good company on this thread 😁. I don't actually think it is shallow to find a clever, well groomed, fit man fanciable at all! I find so few men of my age or older fanciable, it makes a refreshing change.

Basically saying we should look after ourselves as sovereign nations, globalisation was a con, increase defence spending, protect our own borders and re-industrialise?

Is that all that you took from it?

Interesting.

Well, he's been on his travels making deals with those paragons of liberal democracy Qatar and China so who knows what he really thinks.

Some parts of his speech were ok - focusing on defence, fuel and food is refreshing after the many years of preaching Net Zero - which is useless for all 3 - but overall it did seem a lot of impressive sounding words to defend cosying up to seemingly deeply dubious administrations.

I don't think anyone is seriously suggesting that China shouldn't be handled with caution. Of course it should. But we have operated too long on the assumption that the US is good/trustworthy and that China is bad/untrustworthy, whereas the reality is much more complex than that. There may be benefits to collaborating with either power in certain areas, but we should not blindly put our faith in either, nor should we allow ourselves to become overly reliant on any single partner.

I'm really curious as to why anyone would think that the content of the speech would have been criticised heavily if it had been delivered by someone else. I wonder if those who think such a speech could have been delivered by a far right type like Farage have actually missed the point that Carney was making? It is the very antithesis of what Farage and his cronies stand for.

NigellaWannabe1 · 21/01/2026 17:24

It’s an absolutely excellent speech and so well delivered. Not sure Trump will be able to follow it, though! 😂

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 21/01/2026 17:42

Dont you just wish you were Canadian. What a statesman.

LadyRoughDiamond · 21/01/2026 17:56

Brilliant speech.

I’ve fancied him since he was Governor of the Bank of England.

Makingsenseofitall · 21/01/2026 21:10

MrsFaustus · 21/01/2026 11:44

He was always impressive in his Bank of England role. Let’s hope other leaders take heed. Have I misunderstood though, did a poster say he was a bully? Why?

The way he deals with colleagues and subordinates is actually really nasty. He is a bully. But an incredible statesman and I am not taking that away from him. I am delighted. But in his personal dealings with people he is not a nice man.

Pinkissmart · 21/01/2026 21:21

PrincessofWells · 21/01/2026 06:16

Am I the only one who finds Mark Carney very attractive?

No- there’s a Carney thirst page in Instagram

Absolutely agree and summed up the state of things at the moment America is just an embarrassment

sleepwouldbenice · 22/01/2026 00:12

AlecTrevelyan006 · 21/01/2026 15:48

Basically saying we should look after ourselves as sovereign nations, globalisation was a con, increase defence spending, protect our own borders and re-industrialise?

The chattering classes loved it, but when Orban/Farage say it they are like 'ohhhh nooo, extreme far-right rhetoric'

Funny old world, especially when he's just tried to re-align with China because another 3 years of distasteful Trump would be too much to bear, like sinking a boat because you don't like the current captain.

Anyway, onwards with Chagos, extra-national law obedience, off-shoring of our power manufacturing, can't tell you what a woman is, petty meddling government.

It's a funny old world.

Incredulous that that’s what you heard when there were so many more layers and depth to it than that

but hey if Farage and gb news are your normal fodder, as is so very obvious from your narrative, then I guess it flew right over your head

sleepwouldbenice · 22/01/2026 00:17

I thought the speech was inspiring in a time of despair.

I do flinch when countries like china, Qatar etc are mentioned I agree. Especially regarding human rights. But the wording was definitely about eggs and baskets, except much more eloquent
there are somethings re Canada that I firmly don’t believe in. But they simply pale into insignificance compared to Trump, farage etc

CottonCandyLand · 22/01/2026 04:42

As a Canadian I am proud of him. He is standing up to a bully unlike arse-suck Trudeau who just wanted to look good on the world stage.
He has basically given Trump the middle finger from the beginning when he said he would not deal with trump if trump referred to him as governor of Canada.
DH voted conservative in our election but is saying he thinks Carney is the right man for the job right now.
Don’t forget Alberta is planning to hold a separatist referendum under its trump supporting leader …

MrsFaustus · 22/01/2026 09:47

Makingsenseofitall How* disappointing, presumably you’ve worked with him?*

Makingsenseofitall · 22/01/2026 11:37

@MrsFaustus yes

I think a handful of people are wrongfully understanding the speech as "Time to switch from Team USA to Team China", which is a complete misreading.

He's encouraging middle powers not to be on the "team" of any one superpower, and compete with each other for said superpowers favor - particularly in an age where the US is far more aggressively abusing its historical allies.

In that respect, he's advocating "diversifying the portfolio", if you work with multiple superpowers, you're less vulnerable to the whims of any given one.

At the same time, he's calling for greater cooperation among middle powers.

Oh, I think he's very attractive. Dashing I'd say :) He runs marathons and is obvs very intelligent, which aligns to sexy...he looks kind too 😀

I worked in a newsroom when he was at the BOE and we used to call him the housewives’ central banker for those reasons. 🤣

A much better explanation than I managed!

He couldn’t follow it of course but his advisers would have briefed him of the sense of the speech.
The toddler in chief’s response was that Canada lives because of the US and that Mark should remember that the next time he makes his statements.
No doubt, he’s still trying to decipher Mark’s statements 😵‍💫

@Treacling I imagine China can be both a threat and a partner. That seems to be what the USA is these days!

I come from a 'small power' originally. We've always known this.

It is astonishing to me that the general public in the UK are only just beginning to realise that - that the US are as much the goodies as the baddies a lot the time. And have always been.

International politics is not black or white.

Trump has now retracted his offer for Mark Carney to be on his prestigious Peace Board.
Somehow this man child continues to shock me 😵‍💫
