Do you know how Britain could solve this issue?

I think it is so unfair that British citizens can only stay in the USA, Australia and NZ for 90 days without a visa while people from those ----countries can stay in UK for 6 months without a visa.

Legally speaking, what can Britain do to stop this inequality and make them only allowed to stay in the UK for 90 days?

Does anyone know?

Why does it need to change? What difference does it make to you that New Zealanders can come for an extended holiday to the UK and spend lots of their money in our tourist attractions, cafes and hotels?

febgate16 · 11/01/2026 07:04

Because we can’t stay as long there which is not fair.

Well we’re in no position to ask the USA for anything and I doubt they would agree

TheHumanRepresentative · 11/01/2026 07:05

The world isn't fair. This is not something I can bring myself to care about in the slightest.

sorrynotathome · 11/01/2026 07:06

You think it’s “so unfair” but I’m really not bothered. Legally speaking, this country has many, many other things to do.

Agree to what? Changing our laws in the UK?

febgate16 · 11/01/2026 07:06

All Britain would have to do is limit Americans, Australian and New Zealanders from entering the country up until 90 days rather than 180 days to make it fair.

But what would be the benefit to us by making it "fair"? Less tourism and less money put into our economy?

PersephoneParlormaid · 11/01/2026 07:09

I’ve no desire to go to those countries so it makes no odds to me.

Different countries do different things.

You need to look at the whole picture, each nation's economy, not just pick on one difference.

CountCluckula · 11/01/2026 07:11

I think we shouldn’t be letting in Americans atm unless they show 5 years of SM history showing they are not Trump supporters. Since we have to show them 5 years of SM history to go to the US now. We should be more stringent on their visas matching what they actually do when they are here like the US is doing. Changing the rules might make Americans push back on this government properly, field a better opposition candidate, and not sleepwalk into their country just going around behaving this way towards other countries. They are all responsible collectively for not pushing back. Policies only get in if there is public appetite.

Have you researched the economic impacts of cutting the stay from 90 to 180 days?

Hotchocolateandmarsh · 11/01/2026 07:18

Fair doesn’t always mean equal. Honestly it’s not something I can get annoyed by. OP is there a specific reason this is annoying you? Do you have family in one of countries you want to visit for longer?

user38 · 11/01/2026 07:22

How on earth would it benefit us to do that? We make money from them being here for an extended period spending their cash.

what has “fair” got to do with it. I think you need to step away from political topics if you’re unable to think through the consequences of your suggested actions.

So you think retaliation is the answer? What purpose would that serve?

Truly bizarre question.

Well, we don’t yet. The law hasn’t even been passed, let alone implemented.

Celestialmoods · 11/01/2026 07:25

This isn’t important enough to be called an issue.

Why does it bother you?

RedTagAlan · 11/01/2026 07:27

These things tend to be reciprocal. And visa free, or a waiver system, do have strict rules re work etc.

So really, given that none of those categories you mention allow work, the best outcome for the other countries would be for THEM to increase the UK time in their countries so UK folk have more time to spend money.

If that makes sense.

So the UK, under the current rules, make more money from their visitors than they do from ours.

The UK are actually the winners in this situation. So why change it ?

I think the inequality is that we can only go to European countries for 90 days in any 180 rolling period but EU citizens can come here for 6 months at a time & to extend all you need to do is hop back to France, then come back in for another 6months...
Something Bojo's Oven Ready deal never considered...

...though why anyone would is quite a different question....

Thirdchildjoy · 11/01/2026 09:36

No point in cutting off your nose to spite your face.

LighthouseLED · 11/01/2026 09:39

I’m in favour of tourists spending as much money here as possible tbh.

Don’t see why we would want to put additional limits on.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 11/01/2026 09:52

Its not just USA, Australia and NZ. We can only stay across Europe for 90 days out of 180, whereas they can stay in UK for 180 days.

Agree it needs to be reciprocal agreement.

this is gross.

GlomOfNit · 12/01/2026 10:47

Given that I won't be setting foot in the US - unless I have to attend a family funeral, and whether they'd let me in currently is a moot point - for the foreseeable, I'm far more concerned about not being able to stay in EU countries for longer than 90 days in 180. For various complicated and tedious reasons, an elderly family member commutes ever 4 weeks or so between the UK and an EU nation, where her husband resides now (yes I said it was complicated) and neither of them are of an age/mindset where they can go through the torturous series of appointments, interviews and lining up ducks in a row in order for their very long-standing UK marriage to be acknowledged in this EU country. Which is a heartbreaking nightmare. I would really like us to be able to return to free movement between the UK and EU nations.
