Reform led Nottinghamshire Local Authority spend £75,000 putting up Union Jack flags on lamp posts

CandlelitKitchen · 07/01/2026 11:32

Since December the local authority have spent £75,000 putting up 164 union jack flags on lamp-posts in 82 areas across Nottinghamshire.

Each flag cost £457 to buy and install.

What a waste of money that could have been spent more usefully elsewhere.

Round are way they would have paid the council to be able to put their silly little flags up, so this is clearly a grift.

Incidentally, the council have done the paperwork, haven't they ? It's not like they would be so incompetent as to unlawfully damage street furniture and risk a taxpayer funded fine ? Not Reform, surely ?

PandoraSocks · 07/01/2026 11:38

I wonder if Nottinghamshire's council tax will be rising in April?

Tatemoderndrawyourown · 07/01/2026 11:43

Well the labour camden council spent £60k to paint LGBTetc crossings, so I’m not sure who wins in the ‘we are idiots’ game.

Theretogreet · 07/01/2026 11:48

What a waste and yet I thought one of the main objectives of Reform is to save public money.

A nearby Reform led council had it’s leader on the local news with his speech about saving the council ‘billions’ this year….eh..😂

Having checked, the annual budget isn't ‘billions’ and even if it were and savings were made, the public would have NOTHING, no services at all.

Surely LA’s are in place to serve the public, to provide service.
So no bin emptying, roads fixed, lighting, safeguarding of vulnerable children and adults, schools, libraries, green spaces…I could go on.

Common sense would be a great starting point as leader of the council!

Glitchymn1 · 07/01/2026 11:49

What a complete waste of money, I hope voters see it though and rethink their vote should they be inclined to vote for them.

Really ?

I thought their sole objective was to feed the grifters.

:Policies ? You 'aving a larf ?

As a resident of Nottinghamshire... it's a shower of shit.

In their defence - at least the flags are nice, not tatty and seem to be holding up to the British Winter well.

However I'd rather we hadn't lost social care day centres, cuts to budgets out the wazoo and I'd really really like some of the fucking potholes fixed. Or they could put Union Jacks in the potholes or something... or hang potholes from the lampposts.

SumUp · 07/01/2026 11:54

If they’ve got this kind of money to waste, why don’t they do something useful with it such as fixing potholes.

SumUp · 07/01/2026 11:54

Because that would benefit everyone. And if you haven't twigged yet, One thing Reform are not about is benefiting anyone but themselves.

Whataboutism. And it appears you got the council wrong, and the cost.

cost is correct too, so there you go.

also, enough with ‘whataboutism’. Use it sparingly otherwise it means absolutely nothing, which is ironic.

my point that different parties waste money stands. You want to criticise reform? Do it on what matters, like policies.

Fair enough, BBC is banned where I am. I got a different crossing.

And a whataboutism is a whataboutism. Thats the rule. Defend the reform flags.

Good. I want Reform to screw up in as many ways as possible, hopefully then some of the sheep will see the light…

The reality is that Reform will screw up. They will blame Starmer. Their die hard supporters will beleave them and continue to vote reform to show they aren't being fooled by nobody.

Barkingsad · 07/01/2026 14:18

Leader of Nottinghamshire council said in an interview at the time, when questioned about cost, that adult and children’s social care in the county are basically sorted fron a funding point of view! Which is great, or would be if it was true. Thresholds for adult social care are now ridiculously high, investing in AI to look out for people who need residential care. The flags round here are weather battered already.

The only people who hate 'whataboutisms' are people who don't want unfavourable comparisons to be made to their views. It fucks me right off and I say that as someone who would never in a million years vote reform and never defend the stupid flags.

You can't try to pretend that other parties/councils don't pull their own stupid shit just because it doesn't suit though.

'Whataboutisms' are perfectly valid if they are factually correct and relevant.

user98732 · 07/01/2026 14:28

The flags are everywhere. It looks awful and it's an embarrassment. But its what the people voted for..

Whataboutisms pull the discussion off subject. Totally fine, I reckon, to do a comparative example, but it should follow discussion of the subject, or at least an attempt to tackle the subject.

Flags in Nottinghamshire ? Yeah, whatabout Camden? oh yeah, whatabout Clacton? Clacton is it, whatabout Aberdeen ?

So yeah, whatabout these flags in Nottinghamshire ?

HighStreetOtter · 07/01/2026 14:37

Well the local tax payers who voted for them only have themselves to blame. ESPECIALLY when the bin collections are reduced, potholes not fixed etc.

Just feel sorry for the other residents who didn’t vote for them. Maybe next election though if people are bothered there will be a better turnout.

Flags in Nottingham? Waste of money.

Rainbows and trans flags all over the UK? Also a waste of money (as well as supporting an ideology that supports eradicating women's rights and mutilating children obvs).

They won't see it that way though. They will blame immigrants and disabled people with free cars and woke lefties who recycle.

Unless the flags are ginormous that seems incredibly poor value for money. I would love to see how those contracts were procured.

Same as PPE contracts were. A bloke in a pub.

Might be a good idea for an FOI request. I'd say it's evens if it gets a response.

May as well ask for the paperwork authorising the work too. Because you can't just go and stick flags up on lampposts without the correct permission.

Oh it's seriously not a good idea to get me onto the topic of social care in either the County or City, or the chaos they've led to and people in distress by closing down Red Oaks Day Service.

In case anyone is under any illusions - I didn't vote for this shower of shit and spend my working life trying to fix messes caused.
