Why do the very same British leftists who claim that Britain needs to be in the EU as it is too small to go it alone want to constantly further diminish Britain’s power by giving up Chagos and other territories?

These people hate their country so much. Why would you want to make it weak by giving up land when no other country would willingly give up territories for “feelgood” reasons then complain you need to be in the EU as you’re now too weak?

You don't have to be a leftist to recognise that Britain historically thrived on trade but by leaving EU we have made trade with our nearest neighbours more difficult and harmed our economy, and continues to do so on an ongoing basis.

We also used to attract investment as the low regulation / employment rights gateway to the European market and that has largely stopped. Now companies that invest do so to access the UK market only.

Not sure what chagos has to do with this. I believe that the conservatives did most of the negotiation / groundwork.

You really need to broaden your understanding of current affairs if you are going to thrive at your eventual university. How are the applications going this year?

We don't hate our country. We are disappointed to see the rise of the likes of Farage and Jenrick and the inability of some (like you) to accept that people can have different views & a healthy debate without using words like hate. Quite sad views really.

itsthetea · 17/11/2025 08:23

Your idea of being strong is to act dishonourably ?

And to force nations - I am guessing taken against their will - to stay part of Britain

where is your pride in being British ? Your British values of fair play? Of acting with honour ? You want Britain to return to thuggish behaviour? That’s not my Britain

Are you the "Why can't we go back to Victorian times when Britain ruled the world" poster? Because you kind of got your arse handed to you on a plate on that thread. Most reasonable people, left or right, recognise that holding onto a handful of territories nowhere near Britain makes no geographic or political sense and in no way increases our standing in world affairs.

Leavesfalling · 17/11/2025 08:35

The Chagos deal can be a duff deal entirely on it's own . I'm more concerned about the £30billion we are paying for the privilege of giving away our own territory and that the Maruritians (ally of China) are now able to lower their own income tax based on a (potential) rise of ours and our children's.

Pathetic Labour strikes again.

Theft isn’t right

trying to defend theft seems very odd

are they paying compensation then?

do you think victims should not be compensated?

Yes, I thought I recognised the tone.

Boy, are they going to get a shock at university when they discover that a history degree doesn’t involve mourning the end of British world domination in every essay.

Labour signed the deal due to timing but it was negotiated by the previous Conservative government.

I don't know enough about it to know whether it was good, bad or indifferent, but you clearly know even less than I do if you don't even know how it came into existence.

Exactly - being very hard about this, do we want to have chagos Asan option to move to? Not really, do we do a ton of both ways trade with them - nope - so unless it’s got something amazing that we need I couldn’t get worked up about it

Nice try. The conservatives confirmed that it was a bad deal. Priti Patel said it was this year. But Labour pressed on. Labour are the one signing the deal. Not the Conservatives.

The cost is astronomical. If you have kids or grandchildren they will be on the hook as well as us. We've paid to give away our own strategic asset to a country that has never had a connection to the Chagos and is miles away. Keir Starmer cannot tell us what the benefits are. The Chagossians dont want it. Mauritius is potentially going to be part of the Belt and Road initiative. Its madness.

Yes because we are swimming in taxpayers cash and can easily spaff £30billion to the Mauritians so they can lower their own income tax.

The Chagossians don't want the islands handed to Mauritius.

I thought the left were all about self determination.

What do you mean "nice try"?

It is a fact that the deal was negotiated by the previous Conservative government. If they subsequently said it was a poor deal then you have your answer. Maybe it was the best they could do given other international pressures, maybe they are just crap negotiators. I would say "maybe they are secretly the leftists you madly hate" but I do rather doubt that.

Nice try as in you were presumptuous enough to state what I did or did not know.

Labour don't have to sign any deal negotiated by the Conservatives. Obviously. They could pull out now. They should.

I dont understand your point about the "leftists I madly hate?" Maybe you've got yourself in a muddle there.

Yes, this year. She didn’t say that when her party was pursuing it when it was in power.

Well they arent in power and haven't been for a year and a half. So who cares. And Labour can make their own decisions and yet have decided to sign this deal. They don't have to. It's a major disaster for them politically to no good end. Rule of lawyers. Pathetic.

BIossomtoes · 17/11/2025 13:22

The original PP stated that it was the conservatives policy. But even the conservatives dont support it.

Now. They did before July 2024. All you’ve done is expose Patel’s inconsistency.

No it doesn't. Google Priti Patels interview on this with the Telegraph. I know you have a subscription.

Labour are the ones at the helm. And Starmer and Lammy are not the best at diplomacy and getting a good deal for the UK on much, let's face it.
