I am absolutely disgusted by both Shabana Mahmood describing anti-genocide protests in this way when far-right marches of people screaming fascist propaganda have been uncritically happening for months, and the BBC in this article, in particular quoting Ephraim Mirvis as if he is speaking for the entire Jewish community in the UK and uncritically quoting his allegations smearing anti-genocide protests as “antisemitic”.

A horrific antisemitic attack is sickening. Using it for political ends is morally bankrupt.

I'm interested in the stance of other MNetters on, broadly, this situation and, specifically, of Mahmood's comments.

In all probability arrangements had been made in advance for these marches and many of the attendees were already in transit at the time the terrorist incident began. Were they all supposed to pack up and go home?

I mean, there were plenty of things they could have done if they'd paid for their train tickets or whatever that wasn't shouting abuse and fighting with the police.

Ya sega, Shibanata Mahmooda

gingercat02 · 03/10/2025 15:56

You can still be a dick but support Gaza, last night was not the time for any protests. It was time for grief and understanding

I knew your post would go this way, remarks on not liking the Labour gov etc. In response I know you like the Labour gov.

It was an observation on the risk of meeting expectation, in this case related to the words un-British and wrong.

You knew that my post would go this way because you knew what you had been caught out criticising Mahmoud for failing to do something that wasn't within her power to do. If she had failed to speak out against the protests, I don't doubt that you would have found fault with that as well.

As for me liking this Labour government, actually no. I was totally uninspired by them and felt politically homeless before the election, but voted Labour because it was the best way of getting the crap Tory MP out. I have been deeply disappointed with Labour in government and I remain politically homeless. I don't particularly like Shabana Mahmoud and I have been disappointed with some poor decisions that she has already made in her role as Home Secretary. I just think she has got the balance about right on this and she deserves some credit for that.

I also think it's pointless to criticise if you don't actually have any thoughts on what she should have done differently.

'From the river to the sea' is a pro-genocide slogan.

I'm relieved by Mahmood's comments.

Me too. Tired of idiots in the UK supporting Islamic terrorists and using it as an excuse to be antisemitic.

Really no, you’re writing your own views not what I actually think.

It was an observation which has got to you for some reason, it might be the case, we’ll see.

It hasn't "got to me". I just think this kind of thing needs calling out.

I'm all in favour of holding politicians of all parties to account for the words that they use, the decisions that they make and the actions which they take or don't take. I just don't think it's fair to try to whip up dissatisfaction over things that are actually beyond their control. And while you will never admit that's what you were trying to do on this thread, it's pretty transparent that you were.

I'm not going to carry on going round in circles with you on this one, as I think we've done it to death. Have a good day.

‘Expectations might not be met’ really isn’t whipping anything up, I’m sure you can find other stuff to rail against. It might be the case, it might not, me posting the possibility moves the dial on that at zero.

I have an opinion and posted it, that’s a chat site for you. Have a good day and all that.

This poster always thinks they've got to you or you're angry, blah blah blah. Their circle will leave you pointlessly dizzy.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 03/10/2025 16:27

You're right. I have had the pleasure (?) of interacting with this poster on many threads. There are patterns, for sure. She likes to dodge direct questions. She likes to imply that she has "got to you". And she always likes to have the last word.

Sometimes I can't be arsed to engage, but sometimes it feels like it's worth the effort if only to expose what she's doing.

EasternStandard · 03/10/2025 16:31

@MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBackI’m fine if you never quote me again, sounds good but you did ask a lot questions when I wanted to make a simple point.

And reading the AIBU thread on tomorrow’s march I don’t think I was far off. You don’t have to come back to discuss ‘she’ btw with another poster, I can see your posts 😬

AcquadiP · 03/10/2025 16:32

I completely agree with both Shabana Mahmood's and Ephraim Mirvis' comments. And the latter does speak for the entire Jewish community in the UK as he's the Chief Rabbi.

yellowspanner · 04/10/2025 18:16

I also agree with the chief Rabbi's comments and those os Shabana Mamood.
Starmer has enabled the antisemitism by recognising Palestine.

Don’t you dare talk about moral bankruptcy when you yourself are trying to deflect from a horrendous terror attack. You don’t have the moral high ground you think you do.

Morningsleepin · 04/10/2025 18:33

I am anti-genocide as I grew up with the horrific story of the holocaust and it never occurred to me that so many erstwhile decent British people would be in favour of a genocide in my lifetime. And the most prominent voices I follow against the genocide are nearly all Jewish.

Annettefromthenewsagents · 05/10/2025 22:57

It was very very poor taste but don’t worry protests will be banned under new measures being brought in by the home office asap to ban cumulative protests whatever that means. ENJOY. Im not on a ‘side’ but more laws against protesting is very worrying. Probably not worrying if you just don’t care. Nihilism for the win!!

Not everyone here would agree with you or the OP.

On a completely unrelated note, not everyone here properly and fully reads a situation before commenting.
