What is it that riles people up about immigration so much?

I’m really curious at why some people get so annoyed over immigrants. Sure, I’m all for LEGAL migration no matter where the immigrant comes from and I agree that migration should be controlled / monitored to ensure criminals aren’t entering without a solid work purpose. My maternal grandparents were from Jamaica and they worked so hard.

I’m always so happy to see any doctor / nurse in the NHS whether they’re Indian, African, Caribbean, English and I couldn’t ever imagine getting so upset and angry about their ethnicity. I also don’t understand why people get so angry about asylum seekers being temporarily housed in hotels whilst they await their decision

Why are people so annoyed about migrants being housed in hotels? How can they actually be affected by it? On the news it looks like they’re being accommodated at Holiday Inns, not exactly anywhere where the typical Brit would take a staycation. It’s pretty mundane and boring. It’s not The Ritz.

I work, pay my taxes but it doesn’t bother me in the slightest if my tax goes towards that because tax is inevitable and something we never see. It’s just so unavoidable so why complain? I guess it’s like my student loan. Equally, how come these people aren’t annoyed that our taxes can fund royal house renovations or their security etc… I don’t see people protesting outside Buckingham palace? Also what about council housing in the UK? I don’t see people protesting about the fact the council literally gives subsidised housing to brits because they can’t afford it? I’m not sure if the tax payers money go towards this (I might need to educate myself on it) but surely that’s a bigger burden on taxpayers money.

I understand the argument that a country might lose its ‘identity’ with mass immigration. I saw a video with someone saying Japan is Japan because it’s more enough wholly Japanese. India is India because it’s wholly Indian. I get it to some extent, maybe we aren’t typically white and British like we were 59 years ago; but it’s still not enough to convince me that immigration is negative because what would actually happen if we did take all of the ‘foreigners’ outside of the NHS, TFL, cleaners etc etc … I wonder if they’d be enough Brits to fill their spaces? This isn’t sarcastic, I’m curious if anyone knows the answer

Resorting to snide remarks and insinuating that I am hard of thinking does nothing to bolster your argument I'm afraid.

Then show me that you are capable of thinking and not jumping to conclusions.
Or, show where people on here have supported mass immigration.

Do you support mass immigration?

No.

Why not?

What is it you’d like? Can you define it in numbers

Numbers? Immigration in this country should be as long as whatever the numbers are supported in jobs, infrastructure, housing, NHS etc. Let's face it, we wouldn't even be having this conversation if everyone in the UK was living a good life, got a job, home, easy access to health. Sadly 14 years of tory has broken the lot. Not the fault of immigrants.

I also do not have a problem with allowing asylum seekers in, like we have done with Ukraine and other places at war. The UK has had, HAS been the word, a long record of fairness, kindness and tolerance. We should be getting back to that decency.

Happyjoe · 22/09/2025 15:03

DiscoNights · 22/09/2025 14:56

Why not?

I think that's apparent in my previous posts, regarding the broken infrastructure. Until in a position to make sure everyone is warm, got a job, got access to health and schooling then things need to slow down despite the fact that immigration is good for the economy.

This isn't the fault of immigrants, but the governments allowing it in such high numbers without keeping up with the needs of all that live in the UK, including immigrants. Our last gov's made it worse by making cuts under 'austerity' while granting record numbers of visas. Slow down the numbers until the UK is set up better, then go from there.

No. I’m not going to engage with someone who resorts to making personal attacks when I make a perfectly valid point. It’s not worth the effort.

I've no idea how I've supposedly answered my own question, but I've asked you and @sleepwouldbenice what you think, yet neither of you have bothered to respond with any answer at all, instead you've both just been rude about it.

It's the same when replying to other posters, yourself and @sleepwouldbenice both side step questions, you both do a lot of waffling, and there's no substance to your posts. Why not just answer people without being so condescending?

Now, what do you think is the reason it's predominantly men coming over here? Do you not wonder why it's just men? Or do you believe in the narrative that only men could make the journey safely? If so, why?

You realise that the indigenous populations of Jamaica and other Caribbean islands were effectively genocided by Europeans right?

Yes I do know something of the history of the Redware, Taino and subsequently the Meillacan peoples. I'm an archaeologist so my history is fairly sharp. Perhaps I should have used the word "local" rather than "indigenous" as the latter might cause untold confusion amongst readers. Although to be honest I thought its usage would be generally accepted in the context of this thread. Anyway, thanks for highlighting it.

Findingithardnow · 22/09/2025 17:45

Only 8% of immigration is "Illegal" as people would say. 92% of people come here legally. Once they claim asylum, they have to he accommodated. So hotels have some illegal and legal, obviously more legal as they're a far greater proportion.
So if you stopped the boats, you'd only remove 8%.
Many do come here with documents because its easier to claim asylum if you can prove where you've come from.

Vargas · 22/09/2025 17:56

I'm firmly in the middle on this. I'm a migrant myself, now a British citizen. Legal, vetted migration I have no issue with. I don't care whether my doctor, nurse, kids' teacher, MP, whatever, is black, white or brown, or what their mother tongue is. What I do care about is their attitude to women, gay people and religion, and that they speak, or are willing to learn enough English to converse clearly.

If their values do not align with 'British' values then I don't want them here. For example, Islamist migrants who subjugate women, loathe homosexuals, and want to bring in Sharia law can piss off back to where they came from. I have no time for them. If that makes me Islamophobic so be it.

Moii · 22/09/2025 18:03

It's nothing to do with their skin colour it's about people coming here for a better life, economic migrants. I've worked in benefits and had EU citizens telling me they were here for benefits, low income claiming all the top ups. Certain cultures don't want to integrate either. My adult son is still at home while local flats are being renervated for dinghy arrivals.

Because they think the asylum seekers and other immigrants are getting something they aren't. They have fallen for the distraction techniques of the ultra wealthy who don't want to pay more themselves.

It's a tale as old as time, divide and conquer. The richest will continue to get richer while the less well off are fighting amongst themselves.

But they are that is the problem, my grandmother who had worked and paid her taxes since she was 15 years old and now in her 70s cannot afford to put her heating on in the winter or she wouldn't be able to afford to eat. There are videos of these hotels where they are given 3 buffet style meals a day and can use heating, water etc with no cap on usage. Its exactly why there are people riled up. Our own lifelong taxpayers suffer whilst those who have broken the law to come here are treated better!

Its the immigrants that rile me, benefits for UK citizens only!

GiveDogBone · 22/09/2025 18:50

Throughout human history people have blamed immigrants for problems. Problems they are not responsible for.

But there is a genuine sense - and let’s face it, reality - that illegal immigration is out of control. Now it’s also a fact the average person, has no idea of the scale of the problem. It’s much smaller than they imagine, in part because they are being lied to demagogues such as Farage who see it as a route to power.

But as I said, it’s a problem that is rightly perceived as out of control, and one that they can blame their own problems on.

LouiseK93 · 22/09/2025 19:08

We are the same size as New Zealand. New Zealands total population is less than the population of London. We shouldn't be accommodating masses of people.
Also, anyone that risks bringing an innocent child on those dangerous journeys across the channel are scum.

Scrimblescromble · 22/09/2025 19:14

the short answer is an absence of critical thinking skills and not questioning what they’re being fed by the media.

Yet when it’s all men coming over in the boats everyone questions where the women and children are so they can’t win.

Yeah that is true people do say that alot. I guess if they just stay the other side of the channel then no one would complain at all. I wonder whats the appeal of Britain thats worth risking their lives for?

Yes give accommodation to people who live here and actually contribute not people who have no rights to be here

Often it’s because the English language is most widely spoken around the world and/or because they already have connections here. Also we voted for Brexit which has made it easier for people to cross the channel and stay. We do however have a relatively low number of asylum seekers/refugees compared to a lot of other countries.
