Actually, it turned out to be a double article on two successive days, and it was the second one which was news to me - the great, heartbreaking story of the efforts to free Navalny. The WSJ has a paywall, so I went to the library to read it.
But now I see that there is a free link to the second part - which is the better one if you already know the public basics.
