Should councillors/prospective councillors be held to a higher standard of behaviour

In recent years, I have been the victim of a bullying/ harrasment campaign on social media, the ring leaders included several candidates from a local political party including their parliamentary candidate.

I tried to complain to the local party about it but was very disappointed with their response. They only applied my complaint to one person, (although other people had also publicly attacked me). They also said that this person made these statements as a private individual rather than as a representative of the political party. They haven't explained the rationale for this either of these decisions. It then took them several months to subsequently name this individual, and although they claim to have been very supportive of my complaint, no one has ever apologised and no one has retracted the false information about me that was posted online. They don't seem to have introduced any new measures to deter bullying and no one from the party has faced any disciplinary proceedings.

The person(s) corresponding with me has always remained anonymous and repeated one of the false allegations about me as if it were fact and haven't offered me the opportunity to provide any evidence to support my case

When news of the Trigger Me Timbers scandal became public, the same local political party publicly condemned everyone involved saying that the alleged behaviour was inappropriate both within in politics and within the community and that they supported calls for a full investigation

It seems hypocritical of this party to apparently ignore bullying by their own representatives on social media.

I have great sympathy for the victims of the Trigger Me Timbers scandal and think it was wrong of MPs and councillors to attack these people on a private WhatsApp group .

However, it is also awful to be attacked on public forums, because then lots of people get to see the false information posted about you and join in the condemnation. I am not the only person to be targeted by this local political party in this way and it feels possible that some of the claims they have made about people could potentially incite violence within the local community.

Of course they should be held to a higher standard.

And your experience seems awful, but it leaves me wondering how the attacks played out and how exactly you responded. For instance, did you complain to the candidates as well as the party? Did you complain with a formal letter, so that there would be a paper trail? Did you try to go around the one anonymous person responding to you? Did you try to go public in any way, such as via a journalist?

It sounds infuriating, but I'm wondering if maybe you weren't sufficiently assertive.
