Why would anyone think 16 year-olds should be allowed to vote?

Be honest - think back to when you were 16. Did you have an understanding of a broad range of issues? Did you pay serious attention to national news? Okay, even many adults may lapse on the score, but still, it seems crazy to me.

In the U.S., voting age had been 21 and the only reason it was lowered to 18 was that teens were being drafted to fight in Vietnam, and it was felt as unfair for them to have no say.

I’d they are old enough to pay NI then yes. Someone has to drown out the aging right wing selfish boomers.

Why do you think I'm implying anything? I'm just asking about an unfamiliar expression.

Why mention google translate?

Anyway, you can google it. It will be in English

I think if you are going to insult British people of a certain age, you should at least use British spelling? That's just my own view though.

Where have I insulted British people of a certain age?

Well it wasn't really worth me pursuing the spelling issue with the pp anyway. It's just better to keep things civil about people that one disagrees with as to which box to tick on a bit of paper, rather than insult them.

Ignoring the policies of the parties and just looking objectively at the politicians, Farage is politically hugely savvy. If you look at how he is talking about the Epping trouble, he just gets how to speak to ordinary people. He totally gives the impression he"s on their side. Rightly or wrongly.

Compare that with how Starmer described the rioters in July Those rioting about the stabbing of those little girls.. he called them far right.

I think this is going to be the crux of the next election. And if Farage can speak to 16 year olds on Tiktok like he can speak to ordinary people worried about immigration then I think he's going to do extremely well.

Perhaps Starmer is telling the truth? with Farage shit stirring at every opportunity?

Do fairly centralist voters go about trying to set fire to hotels packed with people?

Would you? What would you call people attacking the Police, trying to kill other people whilst chanting racist slogans?

Far Right? or "Concerned citizens" expressing their democratic voice....?

On the Tories, why isn't their collapse in support allowed to be mentioned? is it all too embarrassing for some posters?

Yesterdays YouGov poll puts Reform just 3points ahead of Labour, within the margin of error... & as Reforms policies or rather lack of them, come into focus, support will fall.

I think picking on people for their spelling is rude.

Alexandra2001 · 23/07/2025 09:07

Its usually all they have.. whilst grand standing about how civil they always are.... not.

EasternStandard · 23/07/2025 09:36

@Quirksworkdon’t worry about it, you’ll get attacks but not warranted, have a nice day instead

Hang on. The poster said "someone has to drown out the right wing aging boomers" but you say I'm the rude one in that I picked up on the US spelling of ageing? Your priorities are skewed I'm afraid. But that's 2025 for you, I suppose.

I'm content that I have more to say for myself than insults, Alexandra. Which you know is correct, although you may not always/ever agree with me.

I agree that calling people ageing boomers is also rude, but calling people out on their spelling is especially low.

And whilst the 'boomer ' trope is offensive, there is a grain of truth there in the sense that successive governments in the UK have pandered to the old and ignored the young. That really needs to stop.

I agree that calling out spelling is usually rude and snobbish. I wouldn't usually do it. But I felt on this occasion the poster's rude and superior attitude was grating, so just applied the old "live by the sword" policy.

Agree with your last paragraph actually. See, Previous Rude Poster! You can make a point without insulting an entire age demographic. (And I'm not even a boomer).

SerendipityJane · 23/07/2025 11:50

Anyone who chooses to get worked up about spelling on the internet really needs to find a hobby. Unless being pedantic and dim is a hobby these days ? I may be out of touch.

You’re now going to get pp piling on at how you’ve done the worst thing. Honestly just ignore.

I was replying to the wrong poster.

Or was I ?

Was I replying to anyone, or merely making a passing comment that people could take (as you did) or leave ?

I'm going to have a long hard think about what I have done.

CrushingOnRubies · 23/07/2025 12:24

Tin hat ready for my POV

why can’t a 16 year old not be able to bite. With whole life ahead of them. And in the next parliament be paying taxes and contributing to society, and not able to vote for things which affect them. And has an interest in current affairs or as much as most adults.

yet my dgm who has Alzheimer’s who when asked who the current pm is, replied Tony Blair a pm who was last in power at least a decade before at that time could . And had died within the next couple
of years .

SerendipityJane · 23/07/2025 12:34

Given the state of English dentistry, I can see it could be a problem.

(I guess that needs a 😀)
