Russia has lost virtually all it's long range bombers

The attack on Russian airbases deep into Russian territory has destroyed most of Russia long range strategic bombers. This comes days before peace talks.

I'm wondering how this will affect the negotiations. Will Russia decide to enter a peace stance or will it look at a retaliation and if so what?

Russia has serious economic problems and now this has destroyed its ability to project military power. I think it's a hammer blow with no easy way to come back. It's a Russian pearl harbour moment.

It is a hammer blow, but I think it’s vanishingly unlikely they’ll stop, they appear to have no desire for peace at all.

JessaWoo · 02/06/2025 05:48

I think they’ll look at retaliation, and that retaliation will be in the next few days. Given they’ve lost so many bombers, that could stifle what Russia may do. The aircraft destroyed were primarily used for long-range cruise missiles.

Putin will not stop until he wins. He’d rather die than be seen as a failure or weak

Meadowfinch · 02/06/2025 06:04

The only way I can see this war ending is if Putin dies or is deposed (very unlikely).

He won't give in now, his ego couldn't handle it. He doesn't care how many people are killed, he just want's to look like the big man.

Trump can huff and puff all he likes but he has no influence.

He hasn't got a choice now but to carry on. If he fails, he's dead. He can't step down as he hasn't as far as we know lined up an obvious successor that won't then kill him. That's the life of a repressive dictator unfortunately.

TranceNation · 02/06/2025 07:01

It certainly looks like a very impactful attack by Ukraine. Will it force Putin's hand into peace talks? I very doubt it.

They've now lost the bridge to Crimea,

Won't have a large effect. They are older bombers that need replacing anyway. The role these bombers play can be filled in by other aircraft.

dubsie · 04/06/2025 18:23

I don't believe that to be true at all, these bombers are long range bombers and are still in use. They are key to Russian nuclear deterrent and for launching air to ground missiles.

I think it's a major blow and I can't see Russia coming back easily from it. It's not like they are in a position to replace them.

It’s interesting how they spin it to the Russian people… I guess they will try and minimise the impact… but based on the note of retaliation it’s obviously hurt them… no matter what happens Ukraine have a moment in history. I wonder what other cleaver things they can do to derail the invasion…

I'm not sure if it's correct that Russia lost "most" of those planes. I think the numbers aren't verified.

But it's very clear that Putin has a very difficult time backing down, and as long as he can "buy" troops from other countries, so that fewer Russians are being killed, I don't know how much incentive he has to quit. I'm also not sure how Trump might be a factor. If Trump is offended at the way Putin is bursting him off, it's possible that Trump might be persuaded to funnel more support to Ukraine.

MummyShah369 · 07/06/2025 17:32

Trumph is more involved in his local politics and tariffs probably does not care about world justice given he is also convicted!!!
Russia must have felt this attack as they are retaliating but nothing different from what they have already done… the more they use up their artillery and supplies the weaker they will become… the idea of two kids fighting in the playground until they are worn out and then it’s easy to sort them out…

SerendipityJane · 08/06/2025 16:37

Striking across 3 time zones in an operation that took 18 months and was kept secret from the US at every step of the way means the exact numbers are moot.

Putin now needs to go about stopping and searching every truck (and possibly train container) anywhere within "Russia". Unless he wants to risk there being a second and maybe third series of drones ready to go. That isn't a great development when you want as many men as you can free to fight.

MummyShah369 · 09/06/2025 20:54

@SerendipityJane thats a very good point about Russia having to do more checks… also it seems as though many people don’t want to be on the front line on both sides no one really wants to take a chance and get shot for an ego politician
