Giving away our territory unnecessarily.

Tax payers will pay £9 billion for the privilege of doing so.

I just don't understand what is going on with this government and I'm actually getting really worried.

The status of the Chagos Islands should be decided by the Chagossians (and their descendants) .

And if £9 billion needs to be given away then it should be given to the Chagossians (and their descendants).

It has got nothing to do with Mauritius.

Jackrussellsaremad · 21/05/2025 23:30

I agree with what you say, other than the need.to pay £9 billion of UK taxpayer money, payable by us.and our children, in order to give away our own territory..

The most important thing to Keir Starmer should be the UK people not the.Chagossians. I'm just not sure the UK people are any more.

And why is the full assessment of the decision “highly classified” ?

Sausagenbacon · 22/05/2025 21:35

The whole thing stinks.
But, weirdly, it's tumbleweed on MN.

I know. Although perhaps that suggests it's an indefensible act by Starmer.

I see now we, our children and grandchildren are on the hook for £101 million/ year for 99 years which will total £3.4 billion. Paying for the privilege of giving away our own territory.

I think Labour have gone insane.

Oh no..actually..correction. The ultimate sum appears to be £30 billion due to inflation and requirement to fund development schemes in Mauritius. Mauritius????!!!! WTF??

I know. But it looks like not many share that opinion.
A few Mauritians will benefit.

Agree, it stinks.
As OP has said, the numbers don't even add up. Starmer said yesterday that those who oppose this deal are in the same column as Russia, Iran and China.

Well that will be most of us in this country then? He's got form on denigrating any voter who disagrees with him on any point. It's bizarre.

I can't imagine anyone sees any benefit to the deal and also few people trust him to act in the UK's interests. Can you imagine the French (who have lots of overseas territories still) giving them away and paying billions for the privilege of doing so (including to the recipient country of the territory) over a period of 99 years. No. Because the French would not allow that to happen to the French people.

It's shit but I don't think we should have had it in the first place, and certainly shouldn't have evicted all the Chagossians so that the US can build a defense base on the island. That's appalling.

I don't really know too much about it all, only what I read yesterday, so if I have misunderstood something I am more than happy to be corrected!

EasternStandard · 23/05/2025 10:36

I agree op. Not much on here but generally the public are showing what they think of it outside mn.

hellsbells99 · 23/05/2025 11:02

I don’t understand why major decisions like this don’t need to be voted on in the House of Commons. Starmer should not be allowed to make insane decisions

MPs will be asked to ratify the agreement, but the government is unlikely to lose as it has a large majority.

The Chagossian people have been campaigning and demonstrating against this agreement. It was a Chagossian woman who tried to stop it in the courts.

Mauritius (which is now going to be the new owner) has never previously owned the Chagos.

And they will also receive the £30billion payable by all of us.

So well done the Mauritian government. That's what is called standing up for the interests of your country!

We need to start spending some money in the UK because from where I'm standing i see worrying signs that much of our infrastructure is falling to bits and at breaking point.

It's almost like we want to fail....
