I have just got my ILR. My home country doesn't allow dual citizenship. Am wondering if it is worth staying to get citizenship for the many obvious reasons.

I love the UK but am not sure it loves me back.

So, quick citizenship is actually a core part of your love for the UK?

TheHouseofGirth · 13/05/2025 12:06

Well, I am a high tax payer with private health care. Not used schools or the NHS or any state services. I think I have contributed a fair bit.

Many in my team are the same and looking to move. Especially now that worldwide earnings are taxed. The flight of taxpayers can't be news to anyone, given even native Brits are moving. Other countries may take even longer to offer citizenship, but tax rates are lower.

OP, we are in this country. Private health and education aren't only state services. If you love UK , you wouldn't even bother to see you giving more and gaining less etc. do you actually know what you meant when you say you love UK? Or love your home country? It doesn't happen because u got Ilr, passport etc. if you give unconditional love, you get same back. What you will bring in as citizen other than taxes?

What are the new rules if you already have ILR?

Worldwide earnings are taxed in most countries. A lot of countries have a DTA agreement, however earnings will be taxed in one country or another. A few countries have wealth taxes as well.
I’m in Switzerland. If you think the UK don’t make foreigners feel welcome, take a look over here. They seem to detest immigrants, at least in the press, and most on the right politicians, however nearly all my one to one encounters with the natives has been positive. I expect it’s the same for you?
People easy identify beneficial migrants and the low level migrants that most people, in any country, have a problem with.
It takes at least 5 years to get a C permit (ILR). If you claim social assistance they revoke your permit at renewal if you are not working.
Citizenship here takes 10 years to be eligible (10 years living in the same Kanton, if you change Kanton you start again) then 2 years for the interviews and bureaucracy. If you’ve claimed any social assistance in the 10 years, you are not getting citizenship.

I’d like to know where all these people think they are moving to.

Things have moved on since I last posted ,with retroactive effect on those who already have ILRs. I discussed it to death on another thread so not responding here 🙂
