Anyone following the Canadian election today?

We don't hear a lot about Canadian politics here in the UK, other than the topline news.

Is anyone else following the Canadian election today?

Any Canadians who want to provide any insights into what's going on?

Mark Carney seems as though he's strong enough to stand up to Trump which feels as if it's what Canada needs right now. I wasn't a fan of Trudeau's approach to women's rights and gender identity - I was wondering whether Carney would be keen to keep the same policies and if so, whether that would undo him (as I think it did to the Democrats in the US).

I'm guessing now women's rights/gender politics won't really be a factor in this election because I imagine dealing with Trump is what people are focusing on (understandably so)? From what I've seen Carney has done a good job handling the orange manchild but is that the perception in Canada too?

I love an election so would be great to hear from anyone else following it!

Watching it with interest, I liked Mark Carney when he was at the BoE always seemed to make sense so I think he would make a good choice.

SpidersAreShitheads · 28/04/2025 17:22

@Lavendersquare that was very much my thinking too. Everything he's done so far seems to back up that opinion. I hope he wins.

I'm following it if only to see how much Trump appears to have screwed over the Conservatives by almost endorsing them 😂

dubsie · 28/04/2025 20:45

I was disappointed that Trudeau stepped away but considering the abuse he got I'm not surprised.

I think Carney is by far the best option as he opposed Trump.

logicisall · 28/04/2025 21:14

Many Canadians felt Trudeau was in the thrall of wokedom and won't forget that Carney was one of his top advisers for years. He has also proposed spending C$130B more than Trudeau.

From what my Canadian relatives are saying, the love foreigners feel for Carney isn't mirrored in Canada. Many in Eastern Canada are fed up with Liberals and ready to vote Conservative. Though Carney's tough stance against Trump will swing it for him, I think.

Apparently, Trump's been at it again, calling on Canadians to become the 51st state. Both the Liberals and Conservatives have told him to butt out of their leadership contest - neither want to be seen to be endorsed by him 😂

When are the results due out? Ooh and Monday's an unusual day for an election!

tobee · 28/04/2025 22:14

And Trump is looking more and more like an orange reptile

I actually feel bad for the Canadian Conservatives. Imagine having the unwanted backing of someone like Trump and his party.

User46576 · 28/04/2025 22:30

I like Pierre Pollievre. A lot of Canadians are sick of Justin Trudeau and his woke politics.

Don’t feel bad - Poilievre is practically a Trump-light.

What do you like about him?

leftorrightnow · 28/04/2025 22:38

the only good things Trump’s done is swing the elections in Canada for the Liberals. They’d have lost without Canadians seeing the devastation populist right wing politicians can wreck south of their border. I’m 99 pct sure liberals will win.

NotTerfNorCis · 28/04/2025 23:14

I can't understand what Trump is thinking. Does he want to undermine the conservatives? Or does he genuinely believe Canadians want to become members of the 51st state? Or is this a case of 'I asked them nicely' before he ups the ante?

This was also interesting from the BBC - only a tiny snapshot but showing how voters are swinging away from their usual....

That's really interesting what you say about your Canadian relatives @logicisall - I do wonder if the UK is more pro-Carney because of our previous connection to him with the BoE.

I know, I had to check to make sure I didn't have the wrong day 😂

This link from the BBC explains the timings but in a nutshell, they're saying Mon night/Tuesday morning Canadian time.

This image from the BBC is a good snapshop of when the polls close across Canada.

I'm following.

On our extended-family discussion board, someone posted this:

"You have to ask "who will be the best prime minister". Singh, Poilievre, or Carney. If Christia Freeland was the liberal leader, Poilievre might have had a chance. Apart from all the other issues, we gotta defend Canada against the Orange Orangutan."

DoubleDoubleDown · 29/04/2025 00:41

I'm on my way to vote now and I'm still a little undecided to be honest. I'm not a natural Conservative voter but how can we go along with 10 more years of the Liberals. Sometimes you have to vote for change. I don't like Carney, Singh has no credibility since he jumped into bed with Trudeau.
@dubsie-how anyone could be disappointed by Trudeau's resignation is baffling to me.

GildedRage · 29/04/2025 00:54

i'm canadian in bc. despite there being 4-5 official parties (one only represents the province of quebec and is ultra separatist) the ndp and green are very small parties so due to the perceived seriousness of the situation the election has turned to a two party race.

the dislike of the liberal party who tied so much in red tape and did very little to help anyone other than the trans community had frustrated large segments of the population, the conservatives (which by all standards are only slightly right of center) were predicted a majority win. then came trump and marc carney (who btw has a non binary daughter not that it matters). carney, comes across as calm and serious and very knowledgeable. meanwhile polieverre of the conservative party has been for years portraying himself as an attack dog, fast one line punches, great at getting under trudeau's skin and highlighting liberal stalling and stagnation BUT not really what people think is needed when dealing with the usa.
next came carney and his party platform...which has taken several of the conservative idea's and literally the two parties now sound virtually identical i've had to cross check several times. both need to spend money to develop more independence from the usa, both plan on spending on the military, both plan on spending on infrastructure (carney is wishy washy on oil and pp is more enthusiastic on that front BUT realistically oil and gas is a provincial issue more so than a federal issue quebec at one point staunchly refuses oil and gas pipelines on their soil...preferring to buy from the venezuelans/russians despite us having oil and gas to spare.
most i believe are ending up voting strategically vs along party lines.
i live in a city that has voted conservative for 20 years, unlikely to change now and our member of parliament is excellent responsive and gets a strong amount done.
quebec certainly doesn't want to be part of the usa (their language and cultural "rights" would be shot down immediately), but they dislike the conservative party as the party would impose canadian oil and gas on them and are open to challenging some unique "laws" the province holds (language etc.). so i suspect will support the liberal party.
alberta wants to sell it's oil and will most likely be conservative but the population is relatively small compared to the eastern provinces.

He was also governor of the bank of Canada and got us through the 2008 financial crisis rather well.

logicisall · 29/04/2025 03:17

Well, looks like the Liberals won!

SpidersAreShitheads · 29/04/2025 03:23

Was just coming here to post the same @logicisall!

@GildedRage thank you for such a comprehensive breakdown. Interesting to hear that Carney has a non-binary daughter - I was hoping that he might step back from gender ideology because of the harm to women’s rights, but I’m guessing not 😕 My politics are very firmly left of centre so apart from that, I’d align with the Liberals so I’d say this is a good result. Everything seems to suggest that Carney is well-equipped to handle Trump’s nonsense and I guess now he’ll be able to say he has a mandate to do so.

well in four years will will either have attracted more companies to come to canada (maybe via poaching some usa talent) or be the 51st state. the past 4 years especially were horrible under the liberal leadership (or lack of) and i find it hard to believe that many of the same politicians (despite a new "leader") will actually change their stripes and be effective at attracting new development of any kind we absolutely need more investment and development throughout the country (not only quebec/ontario).

a major water treaty is due to be renegotiated and i really fear trump will suck the columbia basin dry killing several communities in canada that rely on there being some water in the reservoir.
