Trump's latest shakedown of Ukraine.

As always, the devil's in the detail. Latest news is that Trump's shakedown deal for Ukraine would require the country to hand over half its oil, gas and hydrocarbon resources, and almost all of its minerals in exchange for almost nebulous promise that the mere involvement of the US in commercial activities in the country would make the country secure from Russian aggression. It's unbelievable and I want to see Ukraine's response when he has them in a chokehold. The USA is now a rogue state.

How are they supposed to rebuild if they have to do that? Where will the money come from? Are there any details about reparation from Russia, and if so, how is that going to be enforced?

Its absolutely awful

logicisall · 28/03/2025 07:15

I agree with the writer that this deal seeks to make Ukraine an extension of the US's resources. I'm hoping that the 'coalition of the willing' (minus Italy whose PM seems to think that being female will gain her points with Trump 😤) will support Ukraine so that they can reject this deal.

A comment on theTelegraph article, echoes my own thoughts.

Trump isn't just appeasing Putin, he's actively getting into bed with him. The most despicable, morally bankrupt president of all time

Trump has to look to appease Russia to an extent for fear of pushing them towards China. If that were to happen it is pretty much a clicking clock for the west.

He also needs to support Ukraine to avoid a spiralling nuclear arms race while reassuring the American people they get something out of it.

It's a very tricky line to walk.

logicisall · 28/03/2025 09:03

If this is what US support looks like, I dread to think of what the opposite would entail. Plus Russia is already in bed with China.

Outrageous! Can you imagine if President Roosevelt, in WWII, had demand that Churchill had over half of Britain's resources before agreeing to send help?

The US made a lot of money from Europe during the war.

Russia and China have been close for a long time, China has the biggest Russian embassy. Russia, Iran, N Korea, China, all allies.

We only repaid the WWII Lend-lease debts in 2006.

Okay, but that's not the point.

The U.S. didn't demand "ransom" up-front, in perpetuity.

No, they didn't demand a ransom because the war ended the Great Depression. They made a fortune via loans and arms. For example, the US loaned the UK government $3.75 billion, repayable over 50 years, with the final payments made in December 2006.
