Ceasefire in Ukraine

Some promising news, Ukraine has agreed to a 30 day ceasefire. Now it's up to Russia to show willing and agree as well.

In other news the Ukrainian Kursk pocket (in Russia) has pretty much collapsed over the last 3 days and it appears a deal between the two sides has been done to allow the remaining Ukrainians to withdraw peacefully.

Hopefully this senseless slaughter will be over soon.

I agree it has little real effect on the present conflict but in terms of international relations he's putting the UK in a good position.

That’s true @Ursulla

I don’t enjoy the U.K. needing to be so prominent tbf.

Except it’s not really backed up by much if US doesn’t support, but Russia is focusing on us.

Are you totally sure it’s worth it for Starmer’s political capital?

Igotjelly · 20/03/2025 22:49

The UK and Russia have always been frenemies (there’s a good In Moscow’s Shadows podcast about just that). They love to hate us.

A scenario to make Churchill turn in his grave:

Narrator to Churchill:

  • Brits are fighting the Russians.
C: Ah. Again.
  • The Germans are on our side this time.
C: What ? Well, good.
  • And the Americans are on the Russian side.
C: WHAT ??

If the US was on Russia's side they would be supplying them with intelligence and weapons, which they are not.

They are supplying those to Ukraine.

We seem to be keen to be first in line for that.

They paused aid and intelligence sharing and Russia upped their attacks, coincidence?

If anyone thinks the Trump administration is on Ukraine’s side then they haven’t been paying attention.

It's how they've won every war they've ever fought including WWII - by attrition. I guess you could see it as a strategy, of sorts. They have enough people that they can endlessly fling their raped and brutalised young men at the enemy until it runs out of bullets/can't get past the corpses.

They were being attacked in WWII - Barbarossa - and they then were responsible for ending the war - for both themselves and for the other Allies - in both Germany and (many academics believe) Japan. If you listen to Hitler in the 1942 recording you will see that Soviet success was largely to do with their industrialisation, the immense number of tanks being produced in donetsk. And the soldiers were women as well as boys. I have no idea where you got the rape and brutalised thing from, perhaps you could link. Soviet soldiers were accused of raping German women after Germany had surrendered, but American soldiers were accused of raping French women, and German soldiers of raping Soviet women, and so on.

Ukraine has been sold down the river. Ukraine now has a better chance - through trade, peace, stability - if all their citizens go for it.

Are you aware of what happened in 2014 in Ukraine, the 6 billion from Nuland, the large number of "projects" to westernise, the effect of Ukraine signing the EU agreement on Ukraine, on the east of Ukraine and the effect of Maidan on the whole situation in the area? The appalling number of deaths since.

Do you honestly not think that trade, peace, stability would be better?

Duncin are you aware that the Soviets were on the same side as the British for most of WWII including the end?

Though it is an interesting question. I am not sure what Churchill would think of today's shananigans.

DuncinToffee · 21/03/2025 17:45

End, are you aware that Russia invaded Ukraine?

You seem incredibly sympathetic to the Russian cause. In the current conflict Russia has consistently been found by the UN and other bodies to use torture and rape as a weapon of war. For instance https://www.osce.org/odihr/548662

Igotjelly, with all due respect this is about the consequences of armed conflict, which I have said I would like to end.

You think widespread rape and torture is just a consequence of armed conflict? Funny how the Ukrainians have managed to avoid widespread use of such methods isn’t it?
