I couldn't find an up-to-date thread on the latest unfolding situation in Syria. It's clearly very fluid. Following Sky for updates; it looks to be a dramatic period. Hopefully however it unfolds will bring a little more stability and peace to the country 🙏

I wouldn’t be surprised if they storm Assad’s palace in Damascus before the night is over.

I’m keeping an eye here:

Latest rumour is his plane has been shot down...

Userxyd · 08/12/2024 03:49

Wow really??
I wasn't that optimistic and a peaceful future given in all the photos of "crowds celebrating on the street" on Sky News, BBC etc I didn't see a single woman - only men.
Do British journalists not notice this for themselves? Crowds of women would be called "women", why can't they call men, men?
Anyway this lack of observation means they haven't addressed the obvious next question of Syria's future - is it the next Afghanistan?

Userxyd · 08/12/2024 03:50

"about a peaceful future" not "and"

LunaTheCat · 08/12/2024 10:59

I am trying to make sense of it.
Assad is a monster but I am not convinced that the rebels are any less so.
The situation across the whole of the Middle East is terrifying.

BBC are referring to them as groups of men

EasternStandard · 08/12/2024 11:22

I've been catching some on the radio but haven't really got the full situation

Listening now to BBC WS

Not sure what is next for Syria

TheTecknician · 08/12/2024 11:29

Assad, if he's still alive, will jump on a boat at Calais, get off at Kent and get his old job back as a London ophthalmologist.

wizzywig · 08/12/2024 11:40

Hoping that this will be the one middle eastern country where it doesn't descend into chaos and another dictator

SaltLampFeelsDamp · 08/12/2024 11:41

“BREAKING — Assad has decided to leave the presidential post and left the country, giving instructions to transfer power peacefully, the Russian Foreign Ministry says”

News in Cyprus seems to suggest that Syria has fallen and Assad is has flown out of Syria.

More instability and more extremists in charge of yet another country. Remember the insurgents are funded by the yanks and Assad is funded by Russia.

The last time to the yanks funded fundamentalists was Afghanistan and Libya and look at how that turned out ...you watch in 10 years we will be sending in young men again and it will be another decade of war

I bloody hope he doesn’t get his old job back… hopefully General Medical Council would have something to say about that.

That’s a really simplistic explanation. There are different rebel groups involved and they’re not all (or even at all) funded by America. Also Assad in recent years propped up his regime through illegal drug sales!

SaltLampFeelsDamp · 08/12/2024 13:05

Report about the drug trade propping up Assad:

You think, really. And these drug sales....where is the proof of that...Assads regime has immense wealth and the people of Damascus have a very good standard of living. Now the rebels are looting, plundering there countries wealth....let's see where Syria is in 10 years

They said the same thing about Libya and yet they had free healthcare and education....

Must be true it's on the home office website.....no doubt this is a passing blow issued by Biden and his war cronies ....I'm sorry I don't believe anything that comes out of a US and UK combined sanctions report.... especially when we are at war with Russia.

Oh FFS!

Here’s another report. It says if anything the US government covered up the scale of Assad’s drugs trade:

www.fdd.org/analysis/2022/05/03/report-glosses-over-assads-narco-wealth/

dubsie · 08/12/2024 19:11

No mention of the fact that Israel is bombing inside Syria.... providing air support for rebels. The timing and nature of this is impeccable...

SaltLampFeelsDamp · 08/12/2024 19:37

You sound like you’ve gone far down some disturbing rabbit holes! I suggest reading a wider range of well informed sources.

dubsie · 08/12/2024 21:45

French news, I have a villa in Cyprus and I listen to French news. British news has become so Americanised it can no longer be trusted.

While I won't weep for the loss of Assad, what replaces him will be another dictator. When the west destabilises a county what comes after is always bad news.

But this is a really warped and wrongheaded perspective - typical of the Far Left - that everything is the fault of the West!

dubsie · 08/12/2024 22:25

American war planes have launched attacks inside Syria in the last few hours to try and prevent ISIS taking advantage.

Let's hope the Syrian people get some choice at the end of all this otherwise it will end up exactly the same

dubsie · 09/12/2024 07:12

We will have to see, at the moment it's a revolution but those that facilitated it have strong links with an al-Qaeda. So that cheer may end soon

And now Israel has moved into the Syrian buffer zone arguing that the agreement made under Assad has now ended....and is taking Syrian territory.

So as you can see my views aren't warped and are based on what is happening rather than what your news outlets are reporting.

We are now in a full blown middle eastern war,

What about the views of Syrian people, and those celebrating

Do you discount those?

I agree with pp there's often an anti west take on here for any situation rather than the people involved
