The £1.4BILLION for Winter Fuel Allowance has been used for Foreign Aid

…the exact same amount!
It looks like there may be a turnaround and the WFA might be reinstated (something about the Trade Unions objecting…?)

It’s just getting worse….

I have no words .

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/09/2024 21:24

Link?

Is this the 1.4 billion euro deal to Ukraine with the US and UK? Or something else?

wonderstuff · 22/09/2024 21:27

So relatively wealthy pensioners aren’t getting a hand out, but some of the world’s poorest people are? Doesn’t seem entirely unreasonable? If we want to reduce people seeking asylum we are going to have to spend on foreign aid. If we want to grow our economy then helping poor countries out of poverty might just help. Morally as a country which grew wealthy on colonialism we should be supporting countries that were impoverished by it.

Jammedchakra · 22/09/2024 21:29

If we don’t want people here (which it would seem most people don’t), then help them at home. Seems sensible to me.

Hariboaddicts · 22/09/2024 21:30

thw poorest pensioners will still get the WFA so I don’t see what the issue is as it’s not going to cause harm to those who don’t because they can afford their fuel bills?! It’s like arguing it’s unfair that non disabled people can’t get pip !

Summerhillsquare · 22/09/2024 21:37

Yes, the routine government work goes on OP - even when labour win and election, shocking as that might seem.

Bromptotoo · 22/09/2024 23:31

@CrispsnDips can you provide a link that shows £1.4billion directly moved from DWP to aid?

I thought not.

Right now the aid budget is being robbed to cover the cost of housing Asylum Seekers. That bill inflated by warehousing people who may have legitimate claims that were deemed inadmissible by the previous government based on when they arrived on our shores.

nomoretoriesforme · 22/09/2024 23:37

If you are a pensioner living on just the state pension of £11,500 a year you are not wealthy. RR should have done a fair means test eg pensioners living on less than £20k should still be allowed to have it. MP's get far more fuel allowance they have not been cut at all.

DadJoke · 22/09/2024 23:45

No, it hasn’t. That’s not how it works.

SomePosters · 22/09/2024 23:46

Why is it always foreign aid people begrudge but the wild mp expenses for meals out and subsidised bar don’t seem to be scrutinised in the same way?

Where is the eagle eye with which people on disability benefits examined when it comes to the people and companies who commit tax fraud amounting to many times more than estimates of all benefit fraud?

CassieMaddox · 22/09/2024 23:48

I thought that part of Labour's immigration policy was to increase aid to the parts of the world where most people flee from, in order to reduce levels of irregular migration to the UK.
That money has to come from somewhere. Some has come from scrapping the Rwanda nonsense but I doubt it's enough.

I can't get het up about pensioners having their WFA removed when the triple lock means their pensions are going to increase by more than the WFA loss anyway (the triple lock pension increase also has to be paid for,but people are studiously quiet about that compared to foreign aid).

@Hariboaddicts , if only that were true. Many, many elderly people just above the cut off will choose between eating and heating this winter. I’m truly sorry for all of the suffering in the world but we can’t put that right, we can ensure our elderly are cared for. Do you really not care about our own old people?
Take the WFA away from genuinely wealthy old people by all means but not this it’s cruel.

I agree there should be help for people getting a wee bit more than the minimum though that's increased markedly via the triple lock and the post 2016 changes to the basic pension. That could be delivered by, for example, changes to warm homes and ensuring those entitled to Pension Credit get it.

MPs costs for second homes are, in this context, a red herring.

We have a constituency system.Maybe you represent a seat in Newcastle and have a home there. If you have to be in London four or five nights a week to represent your constituents that has a cost. It could be an expensed flat in London, a hotel, or some sort of MP specific accom near Westminster.

It's not a cost they can cover themselves from salary.

Absolutely unfounded misinformation. You are manufacturing and propagating false information. Reported.

Although, also, bullshit. Any proof? One tiny iota? Go on op, you know you want to

Why should we care about ‘our own people’ more than anyone else? I don’t care about an old person from France any less than I do an old person from England

Bulldog01 · 23/09/2024 00:41

My Husband & I are retired we live on 15,000 pa. Last year we spent 3,750.00 On heating/electric.We live in a Victorian uninsulated house. In the winter the Temperature is around 12-14c.When we turn the heating on it goes up to 20c.Sometimes uncomfortable when Temperature drops. This year we were hoping that we may get 200.00 pa towards energy costs.Seeing that the Energy companies have made a fortune recently. We do not have a mortgage as we downsized and paid off the mortgage. It's ridiculous to think we are now comfortable or wealthy!

Razorrain · 23/09/2024 01:16

@Bulldog01 you need to improve the house or move then. I’m in a Victorian 3 bed house and my yearly bill is less than half yours so something is seriously wrong there. Is it a mansion?

I love the heat and it’s always at 21!

the energy companies getting more money is neither here nor there and irrelevant

HeddaGarbled · 23/09/2024 01:29

Wow, a sum of money they don’t even have yet already doing good in the world! Thank you for alerting us to our very new government’s miraculous powers, OP.

dreamingofsun · 23/09/2024 09:01

Its the pensioners just above the pension credit cut off point that have been shafted big time. In reality they are now poorer than the ones on pension credit as they dont get any of the other benefits associated with that.

This should have been put in the manifesto so at least people knew what they were voting for,

How is your fuel bill so high? We have more people in a Victorian house with numerous TVs Xbox's pcs a tumble dryer etc and don't skimp with heating and our bill is less than half yours.

Also why only 15k I thought the pension was 11k ish so x2 is 22k?

I asked Mumsnet to remove this thread as it’s just blatant false news/ misinformation. However they said they wouldn’t. Shame shit like this gets to stand. Seems you can make anythjng up these days
