Who are you backing in the leadership election and why?

I'm not a conservative voter so my opinion doesn't count for much at all, out of the remaining 4 I'd go Cleverly. And that's in spite of his very ill judged jokes.

I just can't pick one. Who would be the least awful? Definitely not Bad Enoch or Jenrick.

TheShellBeach · 18/09/2024 11:30

They're all dreadful.

CassieMaddox · 18/09/2024 11:34

Really want to hear from Conservatives on this. I put the poll in so please vote even if you don't want to comment.

I'm not sure there are many conservatives party members left. They are below 100k members now.

Wow!
That includes my older sister.

Her political views are one of the many reasons I'm NC with her.
😂

I ask this in good faith op.
Why the hell do you want to know what conservative voters think?

BIossomtoes · 18/09/2024 15:47

I asked my bloke who he’s going to vote for. His response was “The least awful but God knows which that is”. I suspect he’ll go for Cleverly if he’s in the final two. It sure as hell won’t be Badenoch.

LlynTegid · 18/09/2024 15:50

James Cleverly. You have to realise the possibility of a Tory or minority Tory government if Labour really do mess up and people who voted for Reform abandon them.

Robert Jenrick is a spiv, Kemi Badenoch talk but little action, and Tom Tugendhat I would not consider because of his recent motoring crimes.

TheNuthatch · 18/09/2024 16:09

Helmet on!

I will be voting for James Cleverly if he's in the final two.
My least favourite is Robert Jenrick.

I'm interested because I follow politics and want to know who the LOTO might be. Because I'm not a Tory voter my opinions are skewed. To me Cleverly seems like the best option but the odds are in favour of Jenrick so I wanted to hear from some actual Conservatives who they liked and why.

It's fine if people don't want to share though.

CassieMaddox · 18/09/2024 16:15

Really interesting that Jenrick has 0 votes so far, the other 3 are equally split. Makes me wonder if the members will pick someone who's not electable. . ( Small sample of 15 atm)

I'm not entirely sure why Jenrick is the favourite to win. He makes my skin crawl personally!

I've been a fan of JC since I watched him on TV with his wife. They did a joint interview (sky news I think) discussing his wife's battle with cancer.

KnittedCardi · 18/09/2024 16:38

Same problem as last time, the party always pick the worst two, so the members basically have to choose between shit 1 or shit 2. I can't believe Jenrick is still there, after Patel, he is second worst option. Cleverly or Badenoch could be OK. Personally I like Tugendhaut.

I listen to Electoral Dysfunction and Ruth Davidson was v. complimentary about Cleverly.

Edited

I missed that episode. Has she backed JC officially do you know? I thought she would back Tom T.

TheNuthatch · 18/09/2024 18:27

@KnittedCardi I agree.
I have a sinking feeling that KB and RJ will be shit1 and shit2

Yep. And she explains why. I like Ruth so it carried some weight with me.

James C joked about drugging his wife so he shouldn't be anywhere near politics.

Which one of the alternatives do you prefer and why?
All of them have pretty severe issues IMO which is why I'm interested what Tories think.

Jenrick still on 0 😱

I remember posting this back in April;

next tory leader
The Paddy Power list up thread doesn't name Robert Jenrick at all (out of 30 plus names) - which is surprising as I would probably place him top 5/6.

I wish I'd placed a bet now!

rainsofcastamere · 18/09/2024 20:34

I'll be voting Cleverly.

You should have done
Shame it looks like he'll go down like a bucket of cold sick with the electorate. Maybe it's Truss mk 2

The painting over the mural episode will follow him like a bad smell for ever.

Whereas Keir Starmer has taken a bucket to the pick and mix sweetie stall - that's not going down well either.
