The non-dom crackdown could end up costing the Government £1bn, Labour has been warned.
The Government’s plans to raise billions by overhauling the controversial regime could backfire, according to research by Oxford Economics.

Yet another Labour own goal?

Perish the thought that a government should actually try to do something moral.

A little research would show that Jeremy Hunt announced the abolition of non dom status in March 2024. But memories are short, so let’s attribute the decision to Labour to make a spurious political point.

Whether the move raises extra revenue remains to be seen. It is difficult to predict behaviour in advance with any accuracy. If it does not raise revenue it will be open to the government to tweak it - as they regularly do with a range of taxes.

Exactly.

Hang on.

Labour could have pulled it. That would have been sensible but no, they need populist policies.

It is sensible and good for community cohesion to consider both economics and fairness. Everyone should pay tax and contribute.

Hunt changed Non Dom status before election. RR is changing it further and was warned all she'd do is drive many to relocate in a more tax friendly country. She didn't listen so I don't suppose we should be surprised it will cost more. She's going to do a similar thing with LL's. All she'll do is many more will sell up and more families homeless dumped in temporary accommodation which will cost the tax payer far more. She's incompetent.

Non Dom's did pay tax on money earned in the UK. They just paid tax in their country of origin on money made there. Not unreasonable I think.

How many of us know a Non Dom? It’s newspapers whipping it up! Jump
on the unfair bandwagon and tax it. That’s going to make the have nots feel better! Utterly gullible. These people spend a lot of money here. It’s like Brexit - you don’t know what you’ve got, till it’s gone - so said Joni Mitchell. Life is not fair. Not everything can be fair. The main thing is to avoid self harm. We just love doing this to ourselves. This won’t make money, it’s populist and people will
just leave and go elsewhere. They can afford to!!
