Who will be the opposition (and when do we find out?)

Will the tories have to team up with anyone?

Is there a time limit by which they have to sort themselves out?

The Tories ARE the opposition party! They got more seats than the others.

Where are all the Labour MP's going to sit - on each other's knees?

Metempsychosis · 08/07/2024 00:28

The Tories are the second largest party by a country mile. They're definitely the opposition.

There was a possible scenario predicted by some pollsters in which the Lib Dems got more seats, but that didn't happen.

They could follow the example of many Tories and Farage when he was an MEP and just not bother turning up most of the time. Almost all of the time in Nigel's face.

Thanks. So they only team up for govt, rather than opposition? Like the tories and lib dems did before?

In theory tories though they’ll be so self-absorbed and occupied with in-fighting, again that the LibDems will probably be more effective in reality.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 08/07/2024 10:48

I would say Reform are the hidden opposition based on the number of votes they received.

Those votes didn’t translate to seats though. Reform won’t oppose; they’ll disrupt.

I think the LibDems will be a constructive opposition. I loved Ed Davey saying “Come and steal our ideas”.

This. Hoping for a grown up debate between Labour and LD in the house, and a sense of working together for the common good.

We found out when the results came in. Confused

They have 5 seats, so that’s not feasible

And this. Although I'm not convinced LD have the ideas and Labour steal them. Daisy Cooper was saying basically this on QT. I think it's just that L and LD have sensible ideas on undoing the Tory mess.

Reform only got 5 seats. That's what counts in the HoC. Not much for an opposition plus they have nothing to say really other than immigrants, and they've backtracked on that. Frage is unlikely to even turn up.

Yes, there was a coalition before because no single party had enough seats to be able to win a vote on their own.

There’s no minimum number for the official opposition party, it’s just the biggest other party. They may choose to join with other smaller parties on individual issues if they want to challenge the government - but there’s basically no chance of that currently because Labour have such a high number of MPs.

Apologies for not being a political genius 🙄There are posts above suggesting LD as opposition, so it's not exactly obvious.

Thanks to @MulberryBushRoundabout for explaining.

We’ve only suggested that the LibDems are part of the effective opposition, not the official one. That’s always the second largest party.
