Milk snatcher Thatcher

I'm on a bit of a high with the change of government and am looking back at my childhood to see what Labour governments did for my childhood as a poor, free school meals child.

I googled when the Tories got rid of milk for infant school kids and was shocked to find out it was 1971, seeing as I was born in 1977 🤔

I swear I had milk at school in the 80s: little glass bottles with a slim straw. Never drank milk at home but happily drank the milk the school gave me to enjoy with my friends. Am I tripping?!

DS had free school milk along with free school meals for the first two years at primary which was fairly recently

Shityshitybangbang · 07/07/2024 00:48

I can remember getting school milk in 1977 for a few years then it just stopped. It was horrible, the cartons smelt of sour milk. My kids who have just left primary school were still getting milk throughout primary. We had to pay though. We are in Scotland

Runnerinthenight · 07/07/2024 00:50

I fucking hated it!! It was either half frozen if the weather was cold, or nearly curdled if the weather was warm! I have never drank milk since!!

You do realise you don't get to control what people talk about 🤣

Is this the same Margaret Thatcher who rebuilt the UK economy after the horrors of the 70s when the Labour government had to go to the IMF with a begging bowl due to rank inflation and out of control unions. When strikes were so bad the rubbish in London wasn't collected and rats were running through the streets. Who privatised the Gas Board, Electricity Board and British Telecom and once that was done you could get through on the phone. I recall buying a flat without a phone in 1982 and the wait for one to be connected was 10 weeks.

I never agreed with the sale of council houses but seem to recall that most of the council tenants at the time fully supported the inititiative.

There were other joys such as ILEA and the Ken Livingston heavily subsidised London Transport costs, increasing rates significantly in areas such as Bromley that didn't have London Transport.

Yeah I don’t think people seem to understand that she was the longest serving Uk prime minster and there was probably a reason for that.

What I've learnt from a lot of these replies is that kids in Scotland get the option of milk. I'm assuming they know they don't have to drink it if they don't like it..And surely if they tell their teacher this then they won't be offered it the next time

Sorry I responded to your rotten thread in the first place - so fucking rude!

Hello, we are in 2024 now. Are you ok?

Are you ok...? ?

They are trying to point out kids had milk at primary even fair it recently. As did my kids. Which is what you were asking...

I think the point about stopping milk was that many families had started to be able to afford milk so it wasn't as vital as before. The move was to providing fruit instead, being overall more beneficial overall

I was asking if I imagined the fact that I was given milk at school, not whether you liked the taste 😵‍💫. You answered in an indirect way, so thank you 🤣

My eldest had free school milk as part of the free school meals universally from reception to year 3 (ie irrelevant of earnings as not entitled to benefits etc so she doesn't get free school meals now)

So all the way through a conservative government 🤔

Runnerinthenight · 07/07/2024 01:14

Piece of work!

titchy · 07/07/2024 01:15

Eugh those 1/3 pint bottles, stored in sunlight. Rank. Remember feeling like vomming every morning break 🤢

You mean Baroness Thatcher who sold off the council houses and didn't build anymore causing the housing shortage we have today? Baroness Thatcher, who sold off all the national utilities in order to make a couple of quid and left us with the absolute mess they're all in today?

Well no, the only time the gap between the rich and the poor has ever narrowed was under a conservative Government. It was also Gordon Brown that royally screwed the economy by selling the entire nations gold reserves at International rock bottom prices.

Bing123 · 07/07/2024 01:19

Oh I know, lets talk about the strikes and riots and illegal international war that the last Labour Government got us into.

BobbyBiscuits · 07/07/2024 01:23

We were made to drink warm unrefrigerated milk out of little bottles with a straw. ILEA, in the 80s, so funded locally I guess. I absolutely hated milk. Still do to this very day! I swear if someone was allergic they still forced it on them. So Maggie's milk snatch would have been the only one of her policies I agreed with! Lol

Margaret Thatcher cut back the free milk from all school children to U7's, around 1970 I think, there was a lot of wasted milk and the money it saved went towards the The Open University which at the time was fee free.

Maybe I should start a new thread, 'Baroness Thatcher who enabled everyone to buy their own home and access life long education.'

Baroness Thatcher who encouraged thousands to borrow beyond their means; whose economy created negative equities, and the ultimate financial devastation for all those whose homes were repossessed?

I've just looked at Thatcher's wiki page and she became PM in 1979 Confused
So the article from the Independent that I linked to originality is actual bullshit Confused

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Thatcher

How can she scrap it in 1971 if she didn't become PM until 1979? 😵‍💫

Edited

It clearly states that she was Education Secretary when she did it.
