One of the most remarkable things about Britain is how unremarkable it is.... What does that mean Rishi?!

Just this...

I think he meant the relative lack of public comment about his race, despite being the first British Asian prime minister? A bit awkwardly worded but I get what he meant.

I t thought he was referring to him being the first non white PM and it not being a huge deal? A sort of “we aren’t drama queens” Maybe I got that wrong though 🤔

IfImOnFire · 05/07/2024 11:01

He paused as though it was the end of the sentence but what he actually said was:

The most remarkable thing about Britain is how unremarkable it is that I, a second generation immigrant could become PM and that my daughters could light Diwali candles in Downing Street

What he means is that Britain isn't as racist as Farage would have you believe!

edpsychfedup · 05/07/2024 11:04

It should be unremarkable that his race is an issue or something that needs endless commentary. That we have a country of decent values and tolerance, not the racism that Nigel is harking on about.

Winniethepig · 05/07/2024 11:06

Maybe I heard it wrong but it was just like, is that it? We're all unremarkable?

To be fair I laughed during that pause thinking wtf is this and who wrote that for him.

But I agree it should be unremarkable that he should be able to follow his families traditions.

After all, Boris got to follow his traditions of having many parties and fathering many children, leaving one wife and getting another. Respect.

I kind of get it. I am watching him and his wife walk into Buckingham Palace to sign out after making a decorous verbal submission. Then Keir Starmer will sign in, and make a gracious but non triumphalist speech, and nobody is taking to the streets or storming any buildings or setting fire to anything.

Which is nice, as is the fact that we take it for granted.

Maybe I'll burn a bit of paper just to keep everyone on their toes.

Agreed. And as my DP commented, the fact that ballot boxes are brought into polling stations in ordinary cars belonging to (we assume) those working at the polling station, with no need for any special security measures. Which would not be the case where he grew up!

We are really unremarkable now, cause the whole country is practically bankrupt!
