Nigel Farage will be the next Conservative leader?

I saw one article suggesting, now he has a seat, he will defect to become Tory leader, and thought it was a joke, but actually there are lots of mainstream media suggesting the same thing.

Tory members will love it and if he'd been insitu yesterday, they may well have won?

For me it's an appalling thought, but it feels scarily possible?

Probably. At least the next election! After 97, they went through Haig IDS and Michael Howard before Cameron!

Achieving brexit

It will be interesting to see who the candidates are. Realistically, is the Sunak replacement likely to be the leader going into the next election? Would anyone with designs on being PM be better off waiting?

It is all so volatile, but the Cons now have a bigger task than Labour had in terms of turning round the party - they have only 121 MPs and have lost many of their most experienced people. How do they fundraise from this position?

They need going on for 40% to vote for them to win an election. How do they do that?

He’s not a member of the Tory party, so can’t be Conservative leader.

And now he’s an MP, hopefully he’ll have enough rope to hang himself.

And be shown up as the egotistic grifter he’s always been.

Phoebefail · 05/07/2024 17:59

Much thinking needed in Conservative Party and I hope this will be the last Leader selected by this current system.
It gave us Teresa May, who tried to ignore the Referendum.
It gave us Boris who we knew was dishonest. N children be X no of women he had deceived.
Liz Truss who was and probably still is stupid.
Rishi was given a job that was already impossible to complete. We in the Party should apologise to him.

That could easily change. I said in OP, the rumour is that he may defect.

Course he bloody won't. Too much work for the man.

There is going to be some opposition to that. It would be a takeover by a hostile force given Farage's recent comments about wanting to destroy the Conservatives.

Also Farage's appeal comes from being outside the establishment and the Conservatives's traditional appeal was they were very much the establishment.

Do you really think these two very different brands can just hook up and both members and voters from the two sides will be fine with that?

Farage achieved Brexit haha! Have you any comprehension at all of the amount of work and ridiculous cost of Brexit? Of negotiators, civil servants, lawyers, and many more spending months and years and costing huge amounts of money. Teresa May and team did 95% of the Brexit work. Boris swanned in at the end and changed a couple of paras of the deal. Farage did sweet FA apart from making overblown promises he knew he would never have to deliver

timetorefresh · 05/07/2024 21:21

He doesn't actually want to do any work though does he? He's just a massive attention seeking brat

Hedgehogsocks · 05/07/2024 21:28

well judging by how many Conservatives were at his birthday party a few months back - I can see him slipping in & gaining popularity quite quickly.

I only remember it as photos of him & liz truss flashed up on the morning news and I snorted my coffee by accident. And another of him dancing with Priti Patel! <insert cringe face>

😂 accurate!

The rise of the right is pretty alarming to me. Putin will be rubbing his hands at what is happening in Europe.

He's already making excuses about why he won't be at his constituency on Fridays 😂😂

I agree.

OuijaBoard · 05/07/2024 22:05

He was also going to obtain German citizenship and move to California.

radiatorbed · 05/07/2024 22:06

Hoping that Kemi Badenoch will be the next leader. She will mince Starmer in debate.

Incidentally does he remind anyone else of Professor Yaffle?

So was May, shouldn't she be apologised to also?

To be clear, I think it would be a terrible, terrible thing.

I also think a Conservative party led by Farage might have won last night, which woukd have been a disaster, but presumably what they would have liked.

The Reform vote would have gone to the Conservatives, but a lot of the Conservative vote might well have left by the other door.

I'm sure a lot of true blue, middle England repeat Tory voters would not touch that bogey Farage with a barge pole.

ageratum1 · 05/07/2024 10:45

Hmm not sure.He achieved Brexit without even being in parliament.

Brexit happened because of Tory infighting and a shit load of Russian interference funded via Aaron Banks.

Giggorata · 05/07/2024 22:36

A Tory MP has already suggested that Farage could be be absorbed into the Conservative party, on account of splitting off votes that would other wise have been Tory.

Churchview · 05/07/2024 22:40

Edward Leigh sounds more like a Reform MP than a Tory already.
"We should have stopped all this mass legal migration. Then we should have stopped the boats."
