Lib Dems - Why don't they have a chance?

Just that really? I keep talking to people who say 'I don't really want to vote Labour, I'd rather vote Lib Dem but I'm doing it as a tactical vote as the lib dems don't have a chance'

Maybe it's just I'm talking to a small group of people who all live in the same area so thought I'd ask a wider audience. If everyone who wanted to vote lib dem did would this make them have a chance? I'm sure there is a lot more to it than what I know and I'm interested in hearing more about it.

I saw on a previous thread that they don't have a chance of creating a government is that because they don't have enough MP's with experience and they'd not be able to manage it even if they miraculously won?

Love it Grin

Oh I know, you should have seen the Tory candidate's face at the hustings!!!
Sadly he still won but with a tiny majority. We're one of the seats with an 85% probability Lib Dem gain.

verdantverdure · 03/07/2024 13:53

Fingers crossed for your constituency @scissy. My Blue Wall Tory stronghold is also predicted to go Lib Dem

bergamotorange · 03/07/2024 13:54

It costs a lot and takes a lot of volunteers to run an effective campaign. The Lib Dems cant afford to target everywhere - they are building up from a low number of MPs.

Also some areas just won't vote Lib Dem in high enough numbers - you might personally know a lot of Lib Dem-leaning people, but that doesn't mean the whole constituency is like you. If you are in a very leave-voting area, for example, a Lib Dem candidate with their pro-EU stance is not as likely to win as if you are in a remain-votong seat. How socially conservative are voters in your area - this can have a big impact.

I think the Tory coalition and the reneging on stopping university fees by Nick Clegg put off an awful lot of people around my age. I'm sure it depends on where you live and your local demographic but everyone I know aged approx 30 to 40 wouldn't ever vote Lib Dem for the above reasons.

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 03/07/2024 13:58

Policy wise I'm aligned with Lib Dems. But they don't agree with me about what a woman is, so I can't really vote for them. It's both essential and basic.

@ItsTapasTime I feel like we are in a similar constituency then. Which makes it all the more confusing to me why people voting labour when they want to vote lib dem when it's very unlikely either will beat the conservative.

It's very tricky isn't it, because if the conservative wins here it would probably be better if everyone had voted for who they actually wanted to show the parties what the rest of us actually want to change in the country and which party we support the most. But I also see that it's worth the tactical vote (still confused why people seem to lean to labour being the tactical vote in our area) in the hope that someone/anyone can beat our current conservative

OP - your friends who are saying they will vote Labour to get the Tories out have probably checked a website like this one:

https://tactical.vote

You can enter your postcode and at the top of the page it takes you to it will show you your best bet for tactical voting. Under that it shows the results of the 2019 election and then under that it shows all the main polls’ calculations on the winner and runner up in your constituency. If they aren’t showing the LibDems as likely winners then it’s going to be a wasted vote.

Apologies if this has already been posted - I’m not able to RTFT atm.

Look up the tactical vote in your constituency

Thanks @FlouncingBabooshka , that's interesting.

The Lib Dems were progressing well in the 2000s and could have kept building. They had a lot of seats and votes and Lab and Con weren't popular.

They tossed it all away under Clegg and had to start again.

Tontostitis · 03/07/2024 19:02

If you believe in single sex spaces and that women have rights you can't vote Lib Dem. I'm a previously life long Liberal/Lib Dem /SDP voter and the canvases walked away from me saying we don't want people like you voting for us when I asked her to explain her parties stance on Women's Rights

I used to like Lib Dem, but this lot seem like a bunch of clowns and I really can’t take them seriously.

Pretty much this - Ed Davey is a buffoon.

AstonMartha · 03/07/2024 19:42

It’s Lib Dem here to get rid of the tories

Same here.

verdantverdure · 03/07/2024 20:14

Ed Davey is about to multiply his 8 seats into 50? 70?

Buffoon that.

delphi13 · 03/07/2024 20:31

I vote Lib Dem, luckily for me we moved to an area where it is usually a close run thing between them and the conservatives. This time round it looks like a clear cut win for LD, my only concern is that the local racists are trying to stir up support for Reform and being a rural area near the seaside with very low diversity, there are a lot of racists about.
