Puerile, personally.

OP posts:

The format was infuriating. 45 seconds gives no time, then everyone is left wanting more detail.

Rockfordpeach · 04/06/2024 22:26

I found it disappointing with no actual answers: too busy taking shots at one another. Went into it thinking I'd vote labour, come out of it with no idea

AbsolutelyFemale · 04/06/2024 22:26

Sunak for me sadly.

Really disappointed with Starmer. What exactly are his policies?

ASuitableName · 04/06/2024 22:28

Starmer inspires zero confidence. I expected a barrister to be eloquent; he seemed out of his depth, and doesn’t appear able to answer questions.

I suppose the danger is that if they were given longer, they would say too many points to be addressed by the other. I thought the presenter did well to keep them both in line.

Yes, I don’t understand why he’s not a better public speaker. It doesn’t make sense with his background.

bramblesbig · 04/06/2024 22:31

I don't want to vote for either Confused

Truetoself · 04/06/2024 22:31

Rishi had plans - even if they are not popular. Starmer ...... what were his answers to the questions asked?

If he gets in power all that will happen is they will spend the next four years blaming the conservatives for their inability to bring about change due to the mess they received the country in ..... the public may extend their run in agreement. Another four years realise they have no back bone nor the skill, and the conservatives will return to power

Houseplanter · 04/06/2024 22:32

Starmer confirmed he is a blithering public school boy with no ideas who instilled zero confidence.

Can you imagine him representing us on the world stage. Makes me cringe

Dbank · 04/06/2024 22:34

I can't help thinking Starmer is morphing into Max Headroom....

So, what did you think of the first debate?
longdistanceclaraclara · 04/06/2024 22:35

Clown show covers it I think. I've seen year 10s have better debates.

StillCreatingAName · 04/06/2024 22:36

It was impossible to watch, 45 seconds of an answer followed by just as many seconds spent telling them off for talking over each. The interviews currently on ITV with one candidate from the other parties is actually much better, as is the presenter.

Just on a group chat with my friends. They’ve all said that. 😅

Did you really? I thought the presenter was dreadful, as they were allowed to talk over each other (I thought Sunak was the ruder in this regard).

I did. She had a difficult job.

Starmer didn't go to public school Confused

(Well, it did convert in sixth form I suppose)

Anjo2011 · 04/06/2024 22:39

Starmer cannot answer a direct question. He just repeats the same things over and over but doesn’t give an answer. He has no plan, no ideas and I have no confidence in him.

She was very weak. I agree it's a difficult job, but I thought it was badly done!

fridaynight1 · 04/06/2024 22:42

Sunak was just Sunak. I expected more from Starmer.

LarkLane · 04/06/2024 22:56

Both mediocre, but I thought Sunak did better than expected.
Starmer needs to stop saying "when I was DPP" and get a grip of what he intends to do as PM.
He should have tackled the £2000 extra tax bill that Sunak kept referring to, but didn't.

mikethedad · 04/06/2024 22:58

I so wanted Kier Starmer to knock it out of the park and knock Rishi down a peg or two but if im honest he looked well out of his depth like a rabbit in a set of headlights throughout. It's a shame as he holds himself so well usually at PMQ's and when he's conducting his own interviews. I get that it must he nerve-racking and the pressure is on for both at the moment. The 45 second limit and RIshi constabtly intterupting him he didnt really get any chance to prove himself worthy and tell us what is plans were. He can explain himself so well when he's given the free reign to do so without time restrictions or interuptions (yes he waffles a bit to get to the point usually but everything he says is relevant to getting to the point) tonight he couldn't do that and thats why I think he didnt offer the answers and plans people were expecting from him. He genuinely looked like he was struggling to answer the questions in the limited time he was given. Rishi Sunak was more confident but we've seen first hand experience of numerous PM's including himself that are all fur coat and no knickers. A lot of what he said was just drivel if you ask me, tarted up with his usual overconfident ego. Kier Starmer really wasn't onhis best form, but I do think his nerves and difficulties answering the questions shows even if he hasn't got all the answers yet, he cares enough to make damn sure he finds them and delivers them if elected. Sadly he was focusing too much on trying to impress and not say something that could be misinterpreted in a format of debate he's not used to of not having time to explain himself like he usually does. That's not his style. He's usually more open, honest and if he has to make statements that some may not like he at least offers a rationale and explanation of why whats he's proposing needs to be done. It's his humble, empathetic and detailed explanation of whatever topic he's discussing that has won so many peoples trust over including mine and he wasnt able to do that sadly tonight. Hopefully next week he wil be a bit more confident....as for Rishi Sunak he was exactly as I expected he would be, arrigantand full of verbal diarrhoea. It does nothing but make me not trust him as far as I can throw him any more than I did before the debate. Ive put my trust in the Conservatives based on promises that weren't kept and an electoral rhetoric that ended up being so far off what they actually did before they coerced me into voting for them. We cant say for certain how honest and trustworthy a Labour Government would be under Kier Starmer but its clear to me that the Conservatives have had far too many chances to get it right and failed miserably so I think the country needs to let someone else have the chance to prove their worth. I just hope Kier's car crash of a delivery tonight doesn't alienate people who he gained their trust, as no other party has a chance of competing so if he isn't given a chance we all know what we're gonna get. Another 5 years of misery!

LMMuffet · 04/06/2024 23:02

The format was terrible. 45 seconds to answer each question on massive topics is simply not conducive to proper discussion or debate, let alone getting ideas and plans across. I thought the whole thing was pointless and borderline crass.

Maddy70 · 04/06/2024 23:07

45 second format was ridiculous. No one can explain in that time. Sunak was shouty and lacked substance. Starmer was boring but gave sunak enough rope to hang himself. He was measured and showed he cared. Starmer was the winner

Actually he started trying to explain why it wasn’t true but the presenter shut him down and wouldn’t let him finish. It was infuriating.

LondonLass61 · 04/06/2024 23:10

That was really poorly managed/moderated. Sunak was constantly talking over everyone - just rude - and Starmer seemed to keep looking at the moderator to actually start moderating!
Also, if Sunak talks about 'the plan working' anymore, I'm going to kick the telly in.
They both have good hair but Sunak needs to sort out his parting. #ImShallow
