Will Sunak go before the GE?

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/02/2024 01:49

Or are we looking at going into a GE where we know the PM will be out of a job next day?

I think he has to go, but that doesn’t mean he will. I find the landscape of our politics dismaying right now. I think sunak simply lacks the charisma and gravitas to take them through an election and I find starmer the same.

people vote for a prime minister and not a party on a ge. When they shouldn’t, but they do. And the two lead candidates, are both lame ducks.

CreateHope · 16/02/2024 08:16

@BobnLen I would imagine voter turnout will be low in the GE - 14 years of the toxic politics that this government have shown us (especially the last 5 years) have put most people off voting for anyone. Johnson and his band of vile supporters have done untold damage to the political system in this country. Unforgivable.

Westfacing · 16/02/2024 08:20

Sunak the alleged tech-bro off to California?

So techy he doesn't know how to not lose his Whatsapps when changing phones.

tiger2691 · 16/02/2024 09:04

Turnout was low, many Tory voters stayed home.

Midnightrunners · 16/02/2024 09:04

No.

the80sweregreat · 16/02/2024 09:10

If the Tory voters all stayed at home will they vote Reform in a general election?
They clearly don't have much faith in the conservatives if they couldn't be bothered to vote for them yesterday.

Flamme · 16/02/2024 09:48

In Wellingborough there was a strong anti-Bone factor in Conservative voters staying at home, and it would probably operate again if the girlfriend continues to be the candidate - which she has said she intends to be.

Apparently Bone only agreed to stand down on condition that his girlfriend take over. He must know where quite a lot of Tory bodies are buried to be able to insist on that.

Flamme · 16/02/2024 09:50

If Sunak were to resign, the only honourable thing to do would be to call a General Election. However, realistically the chances of any Conservative successor deciding to take the honourable course are close to zero, particularly given that there wouldn't be any enthusiasm for it in the Parliamentary party.

CreateHope · 16/02/2024 11:34

Sunak won’t resign - he knows they’d be even more of a laughing stock.

bombastix · 16/02/2024 11:38

No. But they are now in the zone of it not mattering what they do. The Tories are finished. It's obvious that Reform will take them out in those places where they expected to be competitive (not many of those left either).

Sunak loses seat. I mean he's never really known why he wanted to be PM except it's a kind of trinket.

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/02/2024 13:58

I'm kind of glad they're holding onto him. It pretty much guarantees total annihilation at the election. I just wish they would rip the plaster off and go to the country in May.

Why drag it out? All that will happen is the uncovering of more Tory scandal.Confused

I hope you never complain about what’s going on in your constituency if you can’t be arsed to vote.

Non-voters can complain.

In the UK it is legal not to vote and people are free to do as they choose.

TizerorFizz · 17/02/2024 21:45

We might all be better off with less division in society and less politics. I can absolutely guarantee Starmer cannot sort out the mess we are in. He won’t get people working again. He’s little control over recession or inflation. He won’t get millions of homes built. He won’t stop huge population growth. Many of them are here to do the jobs we won’t. The nhs soaks up money and many see worse services in many areas controlled by the government. We demand more and more but work less and less. So tax take falls. But still we want more. Unless Labour borrow even more, there isn’t a sunny upland any time soon. If they keep borrowing it’s our dc snd their dc who will pay.

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/02/2024 15:14

I think you're on the wrong thread @TizerorFizz. This is a thread about PM Sunak and his future. Not one about the Labour Party.

AbeSimpsonsWhiskeySour · 18/02/2024 15:24

The fact that Kingswood was ever a Tory seat is wild! How much time did Chris Skidmore spend on Kingswood high street? Or Hanham?
It should have always been Labour as it's constituents need Labour to get in.

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/02/2024 22:06

I've no idea about Kingswood, but I think Britain lost its mind during Brexit. The Tory party certainly lost theirs.😒

OP posts:
TizerorFizz · 18/02/2024 22:57

@TooBigForMyBoots And now it thinks Labour will put everything right now Brexit hasn’t! Sadly people are easily led.

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/02/2024 23:23

No one is under any illusion that the next government, whoever makes it up, can put everything right.

This thread is about Rishi Sunak. His weakness and short shelf life as PM/Leader of theTory party. Any thoughts on that @TizerorFizz?

The UK is well out of the EU.

This is what they do if a country decides it doesn't like what the EU wants to do.

Good riddance.

Sanctions against Orban and his regime are fine by me.

No, I don't believe the UK is better out of the EU.

ilovesooty · 20/02/2024 20:53

I read it some time ago. No it doesn't.

In any case I've no wish to derail the thread.

This is not a thread about the EU.

This is a thread about current Tory PM Rishi Sunak. His near future, problems leading the Tory Party and its impact on Britain.

The thing is he will lose and badly. However he has never looked happy in a job he worked so hard to get. He doesn't like being asked questions, he certainly shows irritation at basic aspects of democracy, and seems very brittle.

There are certain people like Cameron or Blair who positively glowed with power. Sunak looks like it's eating him.

I'm sure he will get a very good job elsewhere but his motivation has always seemed a mystery to me.
