A Warning About Donald Trump

I don't know how much people here really care about Trump, but I'm sharing a very good editorial from the New York Times. It doesn't contain anything new, but is just very well done. I'm posting an excerpt, with links if you want to read the whole thing.

A Warning About Donald Trump and 2024
This Election Year Is Unlike Any Other
Editorial Board

As president, he wielded power carelessly and often cruelly and put his ego and his personal needs above the interests of his country. Now, as he campaigns again, his worst impulses remain as strong as ever — encouraging violence and lawlessness, exploiting fear and hate for political gain, undermining the rule of law and the Constitution, applauding dictators — and are escalating as he tries to regain power. He plots retribution, intent on eluding the institutional, legal and bureaucratic restraints that put limits on him in his first term...

Mr. Trump does not offer voters anything resembling a normal option of Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal, big government or small. He confronts America with a far more fateful choice: between the continuance of the United States as a nation dedicated to “the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity” and a man who has proudly shown open disdain for the law and the protections and ideals of the Constitution...

Mr. Trump’s four years in the White House did lasting damage to the presidency and to the nation. He deepened existing divisions among Americans, leaving the country dangerously polarized; he so demeaned public discourse that many Americans have become inured to lies, insults and personal attacks at the highest levels of leadership. His contempt for the rule of law raised concerns about the long-term stability of American democracy, and his absence of a moral compass threatened to corrode the ideals of national service...

Mr. Trump has made clear his conviction that only “losers” accept legal, institutional or even constitutional constraints. He has promised vengeance against his political opponents, whom he has called “vermin” and threatened with execution. This is particularly disturbing at a time of heightened concern about political violence, with threats increasing against elected officials of both parties.

He has repeatedly demonstrated a deep disdain for the First Amendment and the basic principles of democracy, chief among them the right to freely express peaceful dissent from those in power without fear of retaliation, and he has made no secret of his readiness to expand the powers of the presidency, including the deployment of the military and the Justice Department, to have his way.

Can americans who support him not see they are trying to re elect an orange Hitler?

MsAmerica · 26/04/2024 02:07

I think I'll disagree with you on that, @HappiestSleeping.

Its not that the U.S. won't elect a woman, even though they're shamefully behind the times. It's that Hillary, for some reason, inspired an astonishing level of irrational hatred. Maybe it's because she was the most feminist of the major women initially, or maybe it was just because she was more or less the highest ranking, with her own excellent credentials. (There was strong negativity against the first woman VP candidate, too, Geraldine Ferraro.)

But I do totally agree that Trump won because of the hatred directed toward Hillary.

I certainly hope you are right. I would be very happy to be corrected, but I don't think we are going to find out any time soon.

I would not be at all surprised if Trump gets in again 🤦‍♂️

RainbowFlutter · 27/04/2024 20:41

I'm also utterly terrified that Trump will get in. The democrats really need to encourage the Black population to vote.

Echobelly · 27/04/2024 20:51

I agree it is quite frightening how it can even be possible for such a person to be standing for President in the USA and the consequences of another term are frightening.

He will empower Putin and increase the likelihood of him triumphing in Ukraine and thus increasing his threat to Easternmost EU states.

I don't know how closely linked it really is to Trump, but if he does endorse 'Project 2025' , it's a concept that serious erodes democracy, criminalises being LGBTQ+, and will turn back the clock on the civil rights of anyone who isn't wealthy, white, male, straight or able-bodied. It will also pave the way for him to be followed by a Christian Nationalist theocrat after he eventually pops off after a heart attack following one too many cheeseburger.

Not as frightening as having a dementia-ridden war mongering puppet as president.

I agree, personally don't like or trust Trump....but Biden has been an utter disaster. I'm left leaning and always have been but there isn't anything left about Biden.

The guy is a war mongering and Ponzi dollar salesman. The money they are spending on war is staggering.

Read today the Securities and Exchange Commission is again attempting to block crypto development. This all stems from Biden and backward looking administration....the world is adopting tokenised currencies but America still thinks the dollar can be forced on us....it's a Ponzi scheme and it's about to fold. You can't keep printing money it really is that simple.

Trump will be the next president and he will scorch the earth of those that crossed him. My personal opinion is that nothing good will come from Trump and with a country as large as America why did they pick two old farts as candidates.

Desperada68 · 28/04/2024 08:39

The type of people who vote for Trump aren't going to be reading the New York Times. Sadly.

If he gets voted in again, while it might sound pretty melodramatic at this point, after January 6th I am confident that time will prove me right when I say that will pretty much be game over for western democracy if not the west as a whole.

I still don't think people understand how close America came to the start of all out civil war that day, but then American history isn't taught in many UK schools. As long as we know about Henry VIII's love life, that's much more important.

Superfans · 28/04/2024 08:45

If anyone is threatening democracy it’s the democrats and mainstream liberal elite acting like the people voting for trump are stupid or wrongheaded. Trump is not a nice man but democracy means you allow people to vote for others that disagree with you and respect their opinions. Biden has been a disaster as president and is clearly senile. Incidentally why are people quoting NYT editorials on mumsnet? Seems a little unusual?

GoldenTrout · 28/04/2024 08:46

Cnon · 01/02/2024 11:45

Some people liked his 2% inflation and secure U.S.-Mexico Border.

The border was not one iota more secure at the end of his presidency than it was at the beginning.

GoldenTrout · 28/04/2024 08:49

One of the many aspects of the support for Trump that I find extraordinary is that so many Americans are apparently happy for Ukraine to be thrown to the wolves.

Superfans · 28/04/2024 09:00

why should USA get embroiled in an unwinnable war in Ukraine? Are you suggesting American boots on the ground would be a good thing? Or should they just continue to fund the Ukrainian government to kill its youth. The cause of the war was US intelligence agencies overthrowing a democratically elected government in a coup in 2014. Might be best if the US kept out. Who destroyed the Nordstream pipeline, increasing all our gas prices? It wasn’t in the interests of the Russians to do that.

Nousernamesleftatall · 28/04/2024 09:06

Biden clearly has advanced dementia and is not running the country. The question is who is? It’s unbelievable to me that Biden’s handlers are going for a second term with him, not to mention cruel.

Depends how you view it. More people have access to healthcare, wages are increasing at a faster rate than inflation, cost of living is reducing, environmental spending is increased, and families are better off than under any recent president. Also, inequality is narrowing, the equity market is booming, and violent crime has fallen.

That's actually quite a good record if you ask me.

And yet, and I concede there is no categoric evidence, all the fingers point to Russia being responsible.

thanks to the link to Project 2025 Echobelly, I had no idea such a catastrophic, dystopian nightmare existed. Absolutely terrifying !

Russia destroyed its own infrastructure ? It was the UK and US who destroyed the pipeline. Biden said he would do it and he did with Liz Truss.

She sent a text to Anthony Blinken (US Secretary of State) within minutes of the explosion saying ‘it’s done.’

People need a foreign bogeyman to blame when the reality is the foxes are guarding the hen house in your own county. They are all bad people.

Trump is a moron, but the Dem scare stories aren't going to work this time when they put a befuddled old man in his 80s as the alternative.

So many Americans have no interest in foreign affairs. If only the American governments and CIA post-1945 had been the same.

How many hundreds of billions/trillions have America wasted on foreign wars and conflicts, when so many American citizens live in poverty or literally can't afford to get sick?

Interesting that none of the news agencies mention this. What is your source? Liz Truss would not have had the authority to do anything like this.

Since Nord Stream had not yet entered service, and Russian vessels were the only vessels in the area at the time of the sabotage, the general consensus amongst Swedish and German investigations is that Russia were responsible in an attempt to undermine Ukraine by blaming them.

Edited

It’s not on the government funded media so it can’t be true. Biden is on camera saying he would do it. As for Liz’s text, look it up.

I also blame the Democrats. Why have they got a doddery, dodgy old gimmer on his last legs as President and running again? A sane country would put forward and elect Kamala Harris. Or anything but have a couple of guys who are far too old running, one of whom is an unrepentant criminal and psychopath, the other who is at least dodgy and doesn't remember what day of the week it is or what he had for breakfast.

What a disgusting state of affairs.

When Trump was competing with Hillary Clinton for the 2016 presidency, remember how nasty the press were about her? She was too privileged, they didn't like her voice, they pearl-clutched about her "basket of deplorables" jibe as though it was the most unkind thing anything had ever said. She was only there because of Bill, she was too intellectual, out of touch with ordinary people and she was of course "shrill", which means "I hate listening to women".
One voter they interviewed admitted she'd be a better President. Then he said "she'd be the first woman President - and I [thumping his chest] am not ready for a woman President". So he wasn't voting for her.
Millions of Americans voted for a cognitively impaired, boorish, corrupt, ignorant, criminal habitual liar who openly admires Putin, because the alternative was an uppity woman whose voice they found annoying.
And now the contest is between him - worse than ever 8 years later - and another very elderly man with cognitive impairment.

LaurieFairyCake · 28/04/2024 11:54

I just think of America as a completely broken, back ward country

Too sexist to let women be elected, too fascistic to want their own citizens to thrive.

It isn't validated on any media apart from Russian in fact.

I had already looked it up and couldn't find anything to substantiate it, which is why I asked.

You will forgive me for not believing Russian propaganda.

Why on earth wouldn't people be discussing a NYT article on MN? Are we supposed to stick to potty training and lunch boxes?

Well, in my case I'm concerned about Putin because my mum comes from a former Soviet Bloc country that borders Ukraine where my parents spend a lot of time, so if a pro-Putin (or at the very least, not anti-Putin) POTUS gets in in the form of Trump, that increases the threat to her homeland.

I don't know if Biden is an especially good or bad POTUS but he certainly isn't a threat to the political balance of the world and many people fear Trump is because he's clearly a very easy President for hostile powers to use and manipulate.

No, but this is a UK based site. The editorial is very partisan. It’s been obvious to most for some time that there are posters here paid to promote a particular agenda. Sometimes to promote a business interest, sometimes by governments or affiliated agencies. The post about trump/NYT feels like it has an agenda around it.
