Was the only reasonable outcome.

So glad to hear that sense and humanity have prevailed.

Wonder how Suella is feeling.

CormorantStrikesBack · 15/11/2023 10:34

No surprise. Suella will no doubt have something to say to stick the boot into Rishi a bit more

JustKen · 15/11/2023 10:39

Quelle surprise! So. What happens now?

megletthesecond · 15/11/2023 10:39

Ha. Good.

Rainingagainonasynday · 15/11/2023 10:41

Yes what happens now?

CormorantStrikesBack · 15/11/2023 10:42

Rainingagainonasynday · 15/11/2023 10:41

Yes what happens now?

Quite. Remember there is no Plan B according to Suella.

I mean the sensible thing would be to invest in the immigration dept/workers and process applications quickly 🤷🏻‍♀️

Westfacing · 15/11/2023 10:43

I suspect the government and Braverman will be pleased with this ruling - now they can blame the ECHR, lefty lawyers, the judiciary, etc.

Had it been deemed lawful they would have then have the impossible task of implementing the plan.

prettybird · 15/11/2023 10:54

Lord Reed made it very clear in his preamble it wasn't just the ECHR: it was the UN Convention to which we're signed up to and a whole host of other treaties to which we are signatories. He explicitly said that it was not just the ECHR.

This was to do with the principle of non-refoulement: a term I had only just learnt after looking up the 1951 UN Convention on Human Rights, when a Tory peer (missed his name) claimed on the Kay Burley show this morning that it said you had to claim asylum in the first stage country Hmm. Lord Dubbs, who was on with him, said it wasn't Confused - but he was reasonable and softly spoken and the other guy just talked loudly and confidently over him Angry. (Clue: Lord Dubbs was right Smile).

prettybird

Have never known where this first safe country nonsense came from.

Well the RN and RNLI have already said they won't machine gun the small boats, so presumably they'll set about draining the Channel and laying minefields on the exposed sea floor.

TerrysChocolateOrange · 15/11/2023 10:58

We have a saying in this house….

Well……….it must have looked good on paper.😂

Ridiculous idea.

roarrfeckingroar · 15/11/2023 10:59

But why are these people our problem?

What are we supposed to do with endless numbers of young men, usually from cultures v different to our own?

Why do British people have to foot the bill for people we didn't ask for?

Westfacing · 15/11/2023 11:00

I know it was under Johnson that the Rwanda plan was first mooted, but do we know who came up with the idea?

Houseplanter · 15/11/2023 11:02

Surely the only way to stop the boats is to stop the incentive to come.

They come with a job and accommodation or they're sent straight back

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 15/11/2023 11:05

JustKen · 15/11/2023 10:39

@JustKen , the government will work with Rwanda to plug the gaps and make deportations lawful. Hopefully.

@roarrfeckingroar , indeed.

Because they’re people. People in need, claiming asylum. If they meet the criteria for asylum then we welcome them. The myth of scarcity is just that, a myth. We are a wealthy country with jobs and resources. People in this country are not struggling right now because we don’t have enough, but because what we have is being terribly managed. But we do have enough. Most people claiming asylum are also happy and willing to work and contribute to the economy.

But essentially what it comes down to is that we are all fucking humans, separated only by arbitrary geographical lines and accidents of birth. So we are all each other’s problem. And if we can help other humans we should.

That is one way to do it. How many were you thinking?

Tracker1234 · 15/11/2023 11:34

Roar is correct. Young men often with different views about women's place in society welcome?

Ifailed · 15/11/2023 11:39

Roar is correct. Young men often with different views about women's place in society welcome?

That could equally apply to the 100,000s of legal immigrants that arrive each year.

The 'small boats' problem is easily solved, take up France's offer to process potential asylum seekers in Calais, and allow those that meet the criteria to cross by ferry/plane - cutting out the people traffickers. Easy and cheaper than the current shit-show.

Hiphopopotamonster · 15/11/2023 11:42

Stop trying to justify racism with feminism. Trying to make immigration a women’s rights issue doesn’t wash. Our asylum laws are for everyone. It’s not a race to the bottom

roarrfeckingroar · 15/11/2023 11:46

It does wash. It's a legitimate concern.

Not wanting thousands of young men with illiberal attitudes, no assets/jobs, often no English, alongside no increase in local infrastructure to manage them... is not racism.

Why do the views of British people not matter?

It wouldn’t be easy. Numbers would go up hugely and how would you limit or wouldn’t you?

Is this even an offer atm France said no to migrants from Italy and a few EU countries have expressed interest in similar alternative country processing - Germany recently

The view on what to do is shifting and will continue, not just here

Roste · 15/11/2023 11:51

Good , it was an inhumane policy.
