Keir Starmer 'glittered' by protester

Bettyboopsbonnet · 10/10/2023 14:34

Is anyone watching the Labour Party Conference on TV?

If so, does anyone know who the protester was who threw glitter over Starmer as he was about to speak?

Starmer took off his jacket and shook it but he still has glitter on his palms and in his hair !

yes I think it is!
but maybe there's an eco friendly version?

VeridicalVagabond · 10/10/2023 17:01

Bit scary really, I mean thankfully it was only glitter, but what if it had been acid or something? How did the guy even get close enough to throw anything over him? Total security failure.

AnneWhittle · 10/10/2023 17:01

also, supposing KS wears contact lenses and some got in his eyes, would be excrusiating

SlipSlidinAway · 10/10/2023 17:04

@Bettyboopsbonnet - I think the point is that Keir Starmer IS under constant risk of attack. He would have been completely focused on the speech he was about to make. Try and imagine what that must be like, as a prominent public figure, to suddenly hear a commotion right behind you, feel someone pushing against you and have something thrown at you. It could have been acid or someone wielding a knife. Certainly not something to snigger at. I thought he was amazingly calm in the circumstances and is to be admired for moving so smoothly into his speech.

Celibacyinthesticks · 10/10/2023 17:08

Impressed it was 2 women security guards who dragged the protester away, the men just stood there!

Legacy · 10/10/2023 17:12

Agree - a total lapse of security! Took them about 7 seconds to get onto the stage to the protestor. He should never have been able to get anywhere near it.

I saw a momentary glimpse of panic in Starmer's face and then when he assessed the situation he looked like he was casting about as if to say 'can someone come and sort this out?'

Also, where were his 'team'? A woman eventually came on stage and seemed to suggest he take his jacket off, but I think he should have gone off stage temporarily, been brushed down and checked that he was OK before returning.

As it was, the news coverage of his speech will all have him twinkling away in glitter - not a great look for a future prime minister wannabe.

TheHappinessEnigma · 10/10/2023 17:16

A little bit of a weird one, eh?
At least the poor sap has the measure of himself.

waterlego · 10/10/2023 17:18

Glitter is incredibly environmentally damaging isn't it?

That was my first thought @PermanentTemporary.

mumda · 10/10/2023 17:25

Real glitter? Not eco friendly.

Summerhillsquare · 10/10/2023 17:30

I suspect this is going to make starmer look good - unflustered by protest and unashamed to speak while sparkling 🤣

PermanentTemporary · 10/10/2023 17:35

The tabloids will concentrate 100% on the Stop Oil protester and will ignore Starmer.

ORYX99 · 10/10/2023 17:44

I'm just amazed how long he was able to stand on stage with him. If someone with a blade would have done the same they'd have quite easily have been able to murder him. It's a weird thing to use (glitter) when there are so many calls for it to not be used due to the environmental damage it does (even festivals have started banning its use onsite). I think Kier just didn't know what to do as he expected his security to be there, and they weren't. He styled it out pretty well.

I hope not. It's becoming a bit old hat now isn't it. Chuck a bit of glitter, shout a few slogans, get dragged off - move on.

I really enjoyed Keir's speech - quite stirring and full of ambition/hope. I thought the remaining glitter on his shirt and hair made it look like he'd been sprinkled with a bit of stardust!

@MariePaperRoses disgraceful comment. You clearly don’t work in a profession where being physically attacked is a constant risk. Pathetic.

Agreed. Attacks on MPs of any party aren't something to endorse and that applies to attacks on anyone in a people facing role.

Bio glitter apparently.

Bettyboopsbonnet · 10/10/2023 16:38

And you do work in such a profession?

What are you, a lion-tamer ?

Is that supposed to be edgy and amusing?

Yes, good recovery. These incidents must be terrifying as a public figure - you never know whether it's a stupid stunt, or someone planning to kill you, Jo Cox-style. I feel sorry for them all when this happens, and I'm impressed when they keep their cool.

This.

Some pompous prat from Surrey did it apparently

Houseplanter · 10/10/2023 18:25

As much as I can't bear Starmer I agree it's a very concerning security breach.

Abhannmor · 10/10/2023 18:32

Bit of a Wolfie Smith is he ?

Liberation for Weybridge!

Exactly this and I'm not a labour supporter

IncomingTraffic · 10/10/2023 18:35

Surely glitter is not very environmentally friendly. So well done there XR.

I agree that the security issue is a problem. It could have been a lot worse than glitter.

Not that throwing anything on people is ok.

There are loads of professions where people are regularly assaulted, e.g. police officer, teacher, nurse.

I wouldn't wish being publicly attacked on the worst of politicians, let alone Keir Starmer.

SlipSlidinAway · 10/10/2023 21:50

The Labour Party have produced a 'Sparkle with Starmer' t-shirt. Brilliant!

verdantverdure · 11/10/2023 04:59

I think Keir Starmer recovered his composure faster than I did. Grin

There was too long a moment where you kind of held your breath.

(Because we know there are loons out there radicalised by lies I guess.)

Nice "rolling up his sleeves and getting on with the job" vibes though.

The woman who came on to take his glittery jacket was spot on.
