Low traffic neighbourhoods

Seen the news today with Rishi Sunak saying he is on the side of motorists with this. This is not the same thing but last year with a combination of cycle to work rapidly followed by having £2 bus fares and living somewhere where there is a bus route which goes to work, I now just use my car if I have heavy stuff to carry or want to go somewhere off a bus route that I can't cycle to.

It has changed my life for the better as I am getting out more and getting exercise. I agree with the idea of LTNs given that I don't like breathing in nasty air and prefer not having to dice with cars that can cause me injury or that are difficult to navigate round because of in street parking, but completely accept that there has been a huge financial cost to individuals where there has happened.

Is there a way that these can be acceptable to a wide range of people in neighbourhoods and if so brought in quickly?

It clearly means they cannot be used for through traffic. Exactly the same where I am.

It clearly means, with increased traffic overall, that the pollution goes elsewhere. That’s exactly what happens. You only have to look at increased journeys to know that’s the inevitable case. It’s why there have been deaths. You can say it’s a great thing for you, but others suffer. Are DC playing in the streets on the main roads? Hopefully they play in your road. The unfortunate truth is, your nice neighbourhood has enjoyed lower pollution because it’s gone elsewhere. Over decades this is clearly the case and cannot be argued against. Your benefit, someone else’s pollution.

The problem is people are so stupid and lazy that we fail to see that using a car for every journey has brought us to this point.

Go back just 40 years and our roads were totally different. They could get busy but nothing like today and we have to acknowledge that our urban areas are becoming more polluted as traffic grinds to a halt.

The car industry has introduced emission control systems but it simply can't keep pace with peoples desire to drive.

So unfortunately government has to act, peoples health is more important. We simply can't sit back and do nothing and they only real way is to impose rules....

I don't see an alternative to be honest
