Is Keir Starmer a total hypocrite?

Curiousvoter · 22/03/2023 18:38

It has just been revealed that Keir Starmer is entitled to a pension (from his time as Director of Public Prosecutions) that avoids him paying tax.

independent.co.uk/news/uk/government-iain-duncan-smith-b2305535.html

Yet he (Keir) has stated that other wealthy' savers be subject to a cap on the amount they can save.

One rule for one etc?

Did he set the rules which entitled him to a tax free pension as DPP?

firealarmmum · 22/03/2023 18:43

Has he said he doesn't want this proposed cap to ally to him or that he's unwilling to pay tax on it??

He is not responsible for this system.

I don't know, but even if he did he shouldn't be banging on about other 'rich people' having tax breaks.

Apparently it is a one off arrangement specifically for him.

Twillow · 22/03/2023 18:47

From the article OP: 'the rules for Sir Keir's pension as DPP were set by the government at the time, which was headed by Conservative PM David Cameron.'

If you think this is wrong (as do Labour, as stated in the article) think about how you will vote!

So bog standard taxpayer should just 'suck it up?'
Nice.

Slow day at CCHQ?

Bluebellwood129 · 22/03/2023 18:55

I was wondering how long it would take for this information to be made public. Sir Keir taking his much loved 'ordinary working people' for fools once again......

Exasperatednow · 22/03/2023 18:58

It's bollocks. Judges were given a particular pension tax arrangement. That's where Starmers arrangement comes from. It was a decision made by the Cameron Tory government.

It was suggested that the same was done for doctors. Instead this government decided to not do that and make the new arrangement so it benefited the very wealthy and not just doctors. They could have applied the judges rule years ago and stopped doctors leaving the profession. Instead they wanted to make it easier for bankers in addition to changing the rules around their bonuses (e g. Giving them bigger bonuses).

Exasperatednow · 22/03/2023 18:59

And this thread proves that people need to research their facts and not just read sensational headlines.

anon666 · 22/03/2023 19:03

Good grief. I'm not that party political but is this all they can get on him?

Compare this to Boris, Hancock and all the Tory corruption.

It feels like nitpicking in comparison

Quite.
I'm wondering how many of the complainers would turn down their workplace benefit that's applicable to everyone else?

It's slightly more convincing that "he's an evil capitalist land tycoon because he bought a small field for his elderly mother's donkey sanctuary!" But only slightly.

WeAreTheHeroes · 22/03/2023 19:11

There's a big difference between entitled to something and actually going ahead and doing it. This is a Tory smear campaign and yet another attempt at deflection when the spotlight is uncomfortably on them.

itsgettingweird · 22/03/2023 19:12

So basically he's the Tories puppet?

Bit of a loose argument!!!

We are all puppets of the government of the time.

Right now everyone gets what the government has says it'll get.

Back then DC set the pensions and tax rules. That's what KS received.

He's saying he doesn't agree and will change it. If the government at the same time he received that pension had the same beliefs that's what he would have had at that time.

For sure.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 22/03/2023 19:16

It said he’s entitled to, not that he has taken it.

Do we really need to list everything that the current government has done, is doing and wants to do?

Try harder OP

Exasperatednow · 22/03/2023 19:19

BTW op, what's benefits does your job have?

RudsyFarmer · 22/03/2023 19:20

They are ALL privileged. It goes with the position, education and career. None of them have any idea how ordinary people live which is why they are happy to pile on the pain constantly by passing every cost onto the tax payers.

I'm retired and pay tax on both my pensions.

Brilliant 🤣🤣🤣

Pleasebeafleabite · 22/03/2023 19:32

Of course he’s a hypocrite. He’s chosen to participate in an unregistered pension scheme. He even has his own statutory instrument, the Pensions Increase (Pension Scheme for Keir Starmer QC) Regulations 2013 FGS.

if didn’t want this tax advantages he could have joined a normal registered pension scheme in which he would pay tax on value over the lifetime allowance.

He is a whopping hypocrite, unless of course, he chooses to pay all the notional excess tax voluntarily.
