AIBU to deem Sunak untrustworthy for avoiding questions?

I don't care whether Sunak has private healthcare. I know numerous people with private healthcare and it would be absolutely childish to hold it against them.

What I care about is honestly and openness.
They're among my top priorities in politicians.

Is it therefore unreasonable to see his answer as evasive?

If his first instinct is to avoid the question, what else is he hiding?

I remember Blair refusing to say whether his son had the MMR vaccine. I'm a bit torn on exactly how much a politician should have to say about their own lives. On the one hand it is their private business but on the other, if they are urging a certain behaviour on the public but refuse to say what they are doing it can look shifty.

Blair was urging parents to get their kids jabbed with MMR but refusing to say if he'd done the same.

Sunak isn't telling anyone what to do about their health provision but I guess a refusal to answer the question and defend his choice makes him look weak. And evasive

Yanbu. But he is a Tory so we should not be surprised.

ginghamstarfish · 13/01/2023 12:31

It's what ALL politicians do when they don't like a question, no matter what party. Hardly news.

yikesanotherbooboo · 13/01/2023 12:34

I think he should be honest in his answers and prevaricating in the case was pointless.I don't think he should have to answer for his family though.

'Honesty', 'openness' and 'policitian' do not go together I'm afraid, no matter what party they represent.

However, in this instance it's frankly odd that he won't give a straight answer. I mean, of course he and his family have private health care, why not just say so?

Exactly.

AIBU to deem (Insert any and all Politicians) untrustworthy for avoiding questions?

YA therefore BU.

He's a Tory. What can you expect?

Iwantmyoldnameback · 06/09/2023 14:16

He was on form at PMQ today. He's becoming as much of a liar as Boris, and that's saying some. Even using the hilarious "Captain Hindsight" nickname which is a shame as he was actually wrong in his statement.

CurlewKate · 06/09/2023 14:31

He should answer the question about himself. Not about anyone else.

The "Captain Hindsight" throwback was absolute cringe.

The prime minister should use the NHS, it's a vote of confidence in the system. His children should go to state school. It's the only way to make sure politicians make state infrastructure deliver.

This government is rigging the system in favour of people who need no help at all. The result is a crumbling nation wide mess. I'm amazed they have remained in power for so long considering the scale of the mess they have created.

This government is cutting your services so they can muscle up some tax cuts before the next election. They know full well that Tory voters want tax cuts and they will take food out of a babies mouth to do it.

MsAmerica · 14/09/2023 01:56

Well, Mary, I don't know how much attention you pay to politics, but is this the first time you've ever encountered a politician being evasive? It seems pretty minor to me, especially as you're focusing on one instance.

I agree that honesty is important, but I think it's usually regarded as hoping that the politician isn't participating in things like bribery.

Whatever difference does it make to his ability to deal with the huge cgskkrnges in his job. If he was ill, I’d want him sorted out quickly. The Royal Family and many others have private health case. His DDs do not need intrusion into his life choices. I don’t care what services they use or don’t, what matters is actually doing the job. Who wants to be a politician these days? Hardly anyone any good. Im not surprised.

Did Harold Wilson have private health care? Callaghan? What about Brown? Did anyone ask? Labour politicians even used private schools!! Shock horror!
